External hard drive - which one do I need?

Ok, so just bought a new laptop but have lots of photos and small video clips (off of old digital camera) on my old laptop, I need to take these off this old laptop and store them somewhere safe.

So couple of questions really.

Which hard drive should I go for? I did a test run on a USB stick but it only seemed to transfer my photos and not the small video clips.

Also, do these hard drives need updating? Meaning if I eventually save all my stuff on one do I need to plug it in occasionally to update software??

Sorry for my complete lack of knowledge, I've never done this before.

And the USB stick I have is only 4GB. That's why I thought I'd go down the hard drive route and then I can store future photos on there too, keep my new laptop less 'messy' if that makes sense. My old laptop ran out of space there's so many photos stored on it!

You can definitely store video files on a USB stick - I have a 16GB Sandisk which I use to back up bits and pieces from my personal laptop (after losing everything when my harddrive imploded a couple of years ago) As a family thing we have a 1TB Seagate External Drive that holds all our music and photos. We can connect to it via Wifi so it just sits on the shelf, no need to plug it in to any of the PCs. As far as I know it doesn't need regular updates, but as it's connected to the router I might just be missing that bit!

An external drive contains no software so will not need updating. Its a very useful thing to have, store music, photos, you can also make a system image of your laptop so if you run into trouble ,you have an easy backup.

£38 gets a 500GB Toshiba disk which will be loads, unless you are going to put a lot of video on. £50 gets you a 1TB Samsung disk.

Thank you all Grin

Was looking to pay between £45-£55 so the Samsung one sounds like the one for me.
