Power cuts and pc's

How damaging is it if a pc gets shut down by a power cut ? We've had it happen twice in last few weeks and are again tonight experiencing flickering lights etc and wonder if another is on the way. Our old pc (Windows XP) was never the same after a series of power cuts but I wonder if new technology is more robust (W8 pc is a year old) or if we should fit anything to the plug.

We had a lot of hardware failures in our pc that we eventually attributed to the power tripping out frequently.

We invested in a ups similar to this one it tides us over blips and when the power properly goes it theoretically keeps my Internet going for a while, only last time my Internet went down very quickly - I think because the local cable box must have lost power too.

Connect the Pc to a surge protection plug. Any other intelligent devices should also be connected to a surge protection plug.

It's not a software thing, so windows 8 will make no difference. A power cut could fry the hardware.

(If you don't have one handy for tonight, turn it off if the lights are still flickering)

The problem with surge protection plugs is that they don't allow your pc to do a controlled shut down.

Thanks, have realised one of our adapters is surge protected so shifted pc plug to that for the time being. When the power goes down here it takes the whole street out so guess that would include the BT box.
