Tablet advice from luddite: Looking to get geeky DH one, which should I choose?

JoyceDivision · 26/12/2013 20:55

Ok, Iapologise if my post is shockingly thick, but I am rubbish at computers andstuff, while DH loves reading manuals about learning new programs or whatever they are... Blush

so, its a big birthday for DH mid year, and I will hopefully get a bonus of about £300 from work, so I could look to buy him a tablet for his b'day.

So which one do I get?

Is there one that is well and truly better than the rest?

I don't even know what features I should be looking at, so if you think theres anything I should consider, all help would really be appreciated!

another luddite question Smile
a lot of the apps i use on my galaxy ace can only be stored on the phone memory, not the sd card...would that be the same with an android tablet?

Nexus all the way. My OH is a technology fanatic and says Android and indeed Nexus really is a good way to go, both cost wise and use wise.

I used an iPad for work a year ago and couldn't stand it.

Ds is waiting on the release of the new Nexus 10 - Does anyone know when it will be released, or if it will as I have read that Google may abandon the 10 as it isn't as popular as the 7.

Rumour has it it could be at CES 2014, which is in January.

My 2p worth is that the Kindle Fire and New version HD are utter rubbish. My mil has an old HD and it is great for her. The new version I bought my mum you can't do skype as no camera and the adverts are shockingly annoying. I think I will send it back for a refund and get a HUDL instead. I would never buy anything but an ipad for me but my mum is only going to use it for Skype, Internet and Facebook.

Surely it all depends on what you want a tablet to do.A geek will more than likely have a top end laptop/desktop and a tablet will be a quick pick up item to browse the web, check mail etc, therefore does it matter too much if its not top end spec.

I dont think anybody has claimed that the hudl is the rolls royce of tablets,it is what it is a budget tablet,I certainly wouldnt class it as underpowered cheap shite.

As an aside I'm finding this thread an education and I'm so impressed at how much you a know about this stuff. (Or rather I am Blush at how little I do know and clearly should.)

holey how much is a nexus? It is for my 60 year old DM who is not likely to test processing power that much. I know it would bug me but where she is from even broadband speeds are so slow a webpage takes about a minute to load (just a boring one) so I doubt she would notice. I don't want to spend more than £100

flatmum · 29/12/2013 12:42

Thanks fellow geeks for the persuasive reasons which I didn't articulate as well. I stand by my original assertion that he will want either an IPad or a Nexus 7. And nothing else. I personally like the smaller size of the Nexus 7 or the iPad mini and find the iPads too big and bulky. As someone else said, I have a desktop and laptops at home and work so the 7" Nexus was perfect to fill in the gap for use on the train etc. I would be happy to receive a nexus 7 or an iPad mini.

They were £199 before Xmas don't know of they're in the sale at all. The 2012 models can be bought for £100 odd I think and might suit her well?

I just got an iPad mini for Christmas using Clubcard vouchers and cash from parents. I love it. It's great or net surfing and I have downloaded kindle app onto it along with many other things.

I also have a desktop and a laptop as I need both for my work. I have an iPhone which is what swayed me to iPad mini and I'm glad I did as its all been so easy and previously purchased apps and music were waiting to be downloaded.

To the poster who said why have everything, I wanted something smaller than the laptop or during but bigger than the iPhone. It's much easier to sit on the sofa with a tablet than a laptop and the tablet will be great on holiday and far more portable to carry around.

I nearly went for the Hudl because of the SD card though.

Hi everyone, thanks for the replies!

I haven't had chance to read them all properly yet, but I appreciate you all responding.

DH does use apple mac he bought second hand off someone at work and he looked very twitchy every time I used it, so poss apple may be the all singing all dancing treat, but I will read all your comments to weigh up what's best.

I do appreciate the IOU voucher rather than actually picking one, so if I'm at a loss that is always an option.

My dh is a very techy nerd. At first is he opting for the nexus 7. But I came across a quad core Asus memo pad for £129. I did check with him first, he did research into it and told me to get it for him. He loves it (he's a computer technician)

Problem with Apple is almost everything has to go through iTunes. With android you can plug it into laptop and transfer just like you moved files onto a USB stick.

Saying that I do have the iPad mini. It's my birthday soon though and I am thinking of asking for am Asus memo, it's as quick as the iPad mini I have, same size but I can change what I want on it. I speak as someone who had a iPhone for years until I got the nexus 4 in October. I'm an android convert!

After using various tablets, I have to say I love the iPad. It's not buggy, streamline, easy to use and there's so much you can do with it.
