Viruses on laptop. Help!!

My dh's work laptop has no security on it while we use it at home (I now know!) and today a message came up to say there were various infections on it. I downloaded spybot which found loads of stuff on it and cleared most except one which it said it couldn't but if I restarted the laptop it would attempt to again. I duly did this and initially it wouldn't restart and some kind of windows thing tried to repair start up but says it couldn't! (Are you still with me Grin). I tried to turn it in again and it did turn on and spybot loaded again and appeared to repair it.

I decided to double check using Malwarebytes which found some other stuff and I did a final scan in safe mode with malwarebytes AND spybot which were both clear! God, thanks for reading all this if you've got this far!! What I want to ask is if this is enough and will everything be gone? I am not techy at all and am paranoid that there may be still something lurking on the laptop. Dh needs to use it for work and I use it for uni work too. Any advice??

Malwarebytes should be run in normal mode, only in safe mode if windows wont start,so I would run Malwarebytes again.

Why does it not have any virus software on it,there are loads of free ones and MSE in particular is light enough to not hog resources.

What version of windows is it running?

DoctorTwoTurtleDoves · 22/12/2013 07:01

You're really on a hiding to nothing having no antivirus, whichever OS your machine is running. Avast, Sophos and Microsoft all provide good, free AVs which you can download safely from FileHippo.

Choose one of them then download and install CCleaner, let it run and it should remove any lingering remnants of the nasties for you.

Hi thanks for the replies! It seems that the laptop is only covered by antivirus etc when dh uses it in his office and it's connected to their wifi or whatever. It looks like some version of mcafee is on it but not active.

I did run malwarebytes in safe mode the second time I scanned with it and it found nothing then. Dh says his IT dept wouldn't be happy about some other kind of free security being used but bugger them! If it means that we're protected I will get some!

Sorry meant to add, it's windows 7 I think and all appear to be running normally again.

Hang on a minute, you cant run two anti virus programs on the same machine, they may conflict and cause problems.
Does your DH use it at home for work,if so tell him to ask his IT dept to sort it out.

statisticsthicko · 22/12/2013 08:42

Yes he does use it at home for work. Ah yes it now has spybot, antimalwarebytes and whatever the mcafee thing is on it Blush. Told you I was clueless. I guess he'll have to sort it with the IT dept but it means he/I can't use it in the meantime or over the Christmas period which is a massive pain in the arse. Thanks for all your advice Thanks

Malwarebytes and Spybot wont intefere with Macafee, they are difrerent types of programs, its possible that Macafee wouldnt have found your nastie because it was malware and not a virus.

I wouldnt stop using it,just be careful what sites you are using.

statisticsthicko · 22/12/2013 08:58

Yes I think it said malware not virus on the results from the scans. Should I use the CCleaner thing as well do you think?

Ermm, check his work policies. You may well not be allowed to just download and install stuff. Our IT dept would take a v. Dim view.

He needs to let work know the issue withthe lackof antivirus and let them sort it.

1sassylassy · 22/12/2013 09:03

I would, just DONT go messing with the registry part of ccleaner.

statisticsthicko · 22/12/2013 09:04

Oops Blush. Right am going to leave the bugger well alone. Crap! Should I uninstall spybot and antimalwarebytes then? Don't want to get him into trouble! Argh!
