Help with office and windows 8.1

I have a new laptop as my old one died. It had stupid windows 8 on it and I have updated to 8.1, I now need to get office working.

I have the product key from the old one, but not a disc as it was downloaded as part of a deal I got through work.

Right so the question is; can I use office 2010 with windows 8.1 or do I have to use 365?

I'm really not keen as I am coming to the end of my degree and could do without learning a different system.
I also advise people on using 2010 at work and don't want to be even more confused.
And I don't want to spend any more money.

Assuming I can use 2010 with windows 8.1 how do I actually get it? Is there a non dodgy source I can download it from?

Does the new PC have a trial version of Office on it? Try putting in yr Product key. May be worth downloading a trial version and seeing if the product key works. Google the question and see what answers come up. I did and most said you need the dvd, but worth a try. Best of luck

Sadly not.

2010 should work on W8.1 . Sometimes the work versions can only be activated once but if you have the product key you can ring them ask to have it reinstalled

Did you download it from somewhere before? I would expect that the product key will only work if you were to get the files from the same place as you got them originally.

Alternatively, do look at Open Office (although I think it is called LibreOffice now), it is very easy to use and will work with all your existing files. It is free.

You can use Office 2010 with your existing product key. There's a digital download linked to here. Remove any copies of Office that are currently on your machine first (control panel, uninstall a program).

All you need to do is download Office from the Microsoft Web site. You can then use your existing product key when prompted.

Essentially the way it works is that the software is free but the licence key which allows you to use it is what you pay for.

Thanks for replies.

I have used open office in the past and it is ok, but I would really rather use office 2010 especially as I have already paid for it.

Today I tried to download a copy from microsoft, but although accepts my product key it won't let me download- I suppose because it was a cheapy version to start with. Hmm
