Best lightweight backlit e-reader for a 10 year old?

Please?

I was looking at the new Kindle paperwhite (£109 on amazon and that's absolute max budget), but I've just discovered our local libraries don't support Kindles (is that an amazon thing?). Ds1 is a total bookworm and I don't want to/can't afford to buy him books as quickly as he reads them!

Needs to have a backlight as he'll be reading in bed and can't have a light on as he shares a room with his little brother.

All recommendations or things to avoid gratefully appreciated!

I don't wish to be impatient, but, well, I am! Anyone any ideas please?

My 10 year old has one of these and is very happy with it. Save yourself £50 or £60 and spend it on books?

Don't forget there are many great free books for 10 year olds.

Thanks MuswellHillDad. I've seen reviews of those that say the screen isn't quite as good as the Kobo Glo or paperwhite though, and also that the lighting isn't brilliant (including light leaking through badly fitting trim!) - would you be able to let me know if those are issues that affect yours?

I can't compare it to the Kobo or Paperwhite. I would guess they are right. It does cost less than half those. I bought mine from John Lewis, so you can get the nice aftercare service if it goes bad. Trying to sort things out with amazon or with a spotty youth in Currys is not something I like.

I haven't noticed light leaking out from the sides, but I bought a leather book case for it (ebay cheap buy) so perhaps that helps.

I have nook simple touch glow light and it is brilliant. Very simple and supports pretty much anything. My daughter is 13 and she has used it and she also has her own kobo mini. Both are very good and decent pricing,

I have a Kobo Glo, and do borrow library books.

May I ask why a child needs a backlit ereader, though? Surely he shouldn't be reading if the light's off? (disclaimer: mine is handy for night feeds, a purely grownup preoccupation - I hope!)

Because he's sharing a room renter.
I can't contribute much to the discussion as I have a kindle. I love it, but appreciate its not what you want.

Sorry, I missed that! Blush

It looks like the Kobo Glo is currently £99.99, meaning under your budget...

It also has a black and white internet browser (!) I imagine the Paperwhite and Nook have, too, so you might have to think about how he accesses online life...

Paperwhite. No question. Amazon have the best library of books, the best customer service and the best quality devices. Yes you get tied in a bit to their world, but you can put PDF books on it if you need to, there's tons of free books for Kindle and honestly, I'd be buying my books from Amazon anyway. The Paperwhite is hands down the best ereader on the market right now, and if it should happen to break (I've had three Kindles now and all still work perfectly), Amazon will just send you a new one.
