Waaahh! Please tell me it's a common and easily fixable fault.

I blame the DC. No particular reason, it's just that things usually turn out to be their faults so it's quicker to start off by assuming they're to blame.

Hi, have you checked the obvious one..lol
Settings--General-- untick Mute.

Is there no sound at all, or on some apps? Also flick up from the bottom of the screen and see if the volume is zero.

Best of luck

Blush I hadn't checked settings. Mute was ticked, and it won't un-tick which is a bit of a bastard, not even when I stab my finger at it several times in a row while swearing. Angry

It's on iOS7 and there is an upgrade waiting (which I have been ignoring) so I've set that off to see if it makes any difference.

Hi, if you touch the Lock Rotation bar just above Mute, it will un-tick the Mute. No, i don't understand why…lol

ObtuseAngel · 18/11/2013 12:22

I have done the upgrade, mute is still ticked (I will try your suggestion of touching above it, thanks) however the sound is now working. It probably shouldn't while mute is still ticked, but .

Thanks for your help. Smile

Ah, I have figured out that what I though was mute was, in fact, the option to use the side-switch to mute. Which is why the tick only moves when you touch rotation lock.

The sound worked for about 30 seconds and then went off again. I have checked the control centre and it is not muted and the volume is high enough. I give up!

Wonder if it thinks you have headphones in. Try putting headphones in, see if it detects that and does sound through them. Then take them out and see if sound returns to the internal speaker. If that works maybe there is a loose contact in the headphone socket.

Well, I Googled the problem and this thread came up-discussions.apple.com/thread/4984822

May be worth looking through

I had this a few weeks ago. It worked when the headphones were in too, then went off as soon as I took them out. I fiddled with the settings, did a bit of googling and got worried, but in the end the tip that worked was to clean the ports for the charger and the earphones with a toothbrush. Haven't had a problem since.

ObtuseAngel · 18/11/2013 22:00

Off to find a clean toothbrush. Smile

Sorry if you have tried this but have you tried powering it off and on again.

Also, have you checked you haven't accidently put the 'Do Not Disturb' mode on. If you have there will be a little moon in the top right hand side. You can still play music if it's activated but I don't know how it affects other apps Confused

ObtuseAngel · 19/11/2013 20:52

Hurrah, I swooshed the headphone socket with one of the DC's clean paintbrushes (see, there is a point to having DC after all Wink) and now the sound is working again. Just before I did the swooshing I had a calendar reminder that did make a sound, so it was only music and apps that weren't making a noise.

Thank you everyone. I'm happily watching Craftsy videos and listening to the News Quiz podcast again. Grin

Yay! Glad it worked for you. I was broken hearted when I thought mine had died.
