Kindle Fire HD or iPad- or other option?

I've decided I need a tablet- I'm so fed up of lugging my laptop to and from work. I'd use it for writing mainly, and using Lovefilm.

So far after googling and looking at everything on offer, it seems that Kindle Fire and iPad are the only things that have Lovefilm. The cost of the iPad send me more towards Kindle, but I'm seeing reviews saying you can't actually do much with it that isn't amazon related.

I do use iTunes, otherwise I own nothing Apple. I wouldn't know an app if it smacked me round the face! I just need something more portable.

Anyone have both? Anyone use either for writing, are there any pros/cons you've noticed? Or if anyone has any other suggestions- just a small device you can write on (need a full keyboard not a touch one on screen due to arthritis) and watch Lovefilm.

DH has a kindle fire. He uses it mainly for email and internet. The picture is a fantastic quality and it doesn't seem to push the amazon market
I wouldnt like it because I like to watch bargain hunt on iplayer (sad I know)
DD has a google nexus- this is what I would get
DS has an acer something. Much bigger 10" screen, supposed to be higher spec but I still prefer the nexus
I suppose it depends on what you want to do
I've never been able to part with the money you need for an ipad

Yup, the money for the iPad is the stumbling block. If I didn't need to use Lovefilm, I think I'd have already bought a Nexus or Surface- both have some highly recommended. But Lovefilm is a must as I'm already paying for it, and it's so useful when babysitting long hours!

But you can watch iPlayer on the Kindle Fire, I just had a look and apparently you just need to download two apps.

Right I've found a way to get the 16gb 8.9" Kindle Fire HD for £180. Or the 16gb 7.9" iPad mini for £200 (using my clubcard vouchers!) so price is less of an issue. Hmm. I keep seeing bad things about both! And great things! Now I'm considering size. Hmm. Does an inch really matter?

Or.... £260 for a 32gb one. Does it really matter, having extra storage?

I'm completely biased which I will hold my hands up to but apple all the way.

I have both a mini and a full size (don't ask) and I really wouldn't be with any other!

Of course, nothing is without its faults but one thing I think is worth it's weight on gold is the help available from apple should you have problems. A phone call or trip to the apple store and your iPad is fixed or replaced without question.

Kafri · 06/11/2013 21:38

Wouldn't worry about extra storage if I were you. If you start getting full - which, unless you store LOADS on there you won't, you just sync it to your comp and take off what you no longer need.

Oh, me again, and iPad has Pages wihich is apples word processor. It's 6.99 on iPad if I remember correctly.

Microsoft is releasing an iPad version of office too but it's only on the office 365 subscription that Microsoft have introduced so you'll have to pay yearly for that one. clearly bill gates hasn't filled his pockets enough

Oh Lordy, there we go. Got my new ipadmini, just working out how to do all of my most important things. Urge not loving the keyboard! I've got a proper blue tooth ozone on order now.

Oh and I did go for the 32gb one, sure ill fill it up!

Typing on a tablet takes a little getting used to compared to a keyboard.

Congrats on your purchase - you're gonna love it!!

Now - apps! Hope you've found your love film. There's also all the on demand apps too - bbc, itv, 4, 5, sky+ and sky go if you have sky tv??

Kindle app for reading. It comes ore installed with iBooks too. I just compare the prices of books I want on both and buy the cheaper. Not usually much in it but occasionally there's money to be saved. You can open PDF docs in iBooks too.

Facebook and/or twitter if you're on there.

Lots of retailers have apps if you shop online - amazon app is good.

eBay

Banking apps for most banks now.

The officy apps - pages, keynote and numbers

I've not found an app to make me a brew yet Grin

Ooohh, mumsnet app (though, shhhh, this one isn't the best)

The possibilities are endless

Enjoy!!

thanks for the list Kafri, I did get Kindle app and I'm so chuffed with it! Most of my books are there to download (well, my legally obtained ones) but you can actually see the covers, so much better than m=on my Kindle keyboard.

Didn't know you could do banking, I'll look that up. Facebook and mn, first ones I downloaded!

Going through old games as I remember them, Uno etc.
