Weak internet

We are moving next month and I know that the area has weak broadband connection. What can I do? Does this mean that all internet will be slow or just the wireless? I am thinking of going with SKy broadband. We have a Sonos system which I don't think is going to work. It is quite a large long house with some thick internal walls. I don't mind getting someone in to sort it out but there seems to be some cowboys out there.
Any advice????

Weak broadband means your connection to the outside wil be slow. Your Sonos work within your intranet at home. That has nothing to do with the internet. To get good wifi coverage, you need to make sure you have enough wifi access points in your home.

Hope this makes sense.

Obviously if you are using sonos to stream internet radio, you might struggle. Some rural areas have truly shocking broadband.

Think we are in the truly shocking bracket. Bit thick but what do you mean good wifi coverage? Do I use more than 1 router on the same thing? So sonos radio won't work but music should be as normal? Good job the house is lovely! Bet you there's no mobile phone reception either!

I would suggest homeplug networks, you can get wifi access points, so you plug a homeplug into a socket by the modem and another anywhere you want wired network access. If wireless coverage is an issue then you can get homeplug wifi extenders.

Something like this in fact.

Wifi signal strength decreases on its distance from the wifi access point. If your house is large and you only have one wifi access point, you might not have signal or very low signal in parts of your house. It sounds like you only one have access point, the ADSL or virgin or infinity modem your ISP gives you.

You will know your signal is weak if your computer has very few bars on its wifi symbol. cruel has posted on how to extend it.

I'm not sure if Sonos used its own wireless network or it has its own. I know you have to buy a bridge so I think it has its own wireless network that is not your intranet wifi.

The broadband is the network to the outside word provided by your ISP. You can't change that. What you have at your home you can use money to fix. HTH

Typing on phone so the post might make less sense than it should Hmm

You don't always need extenders to improve wifi coverage. It can also be affected by metal objects in the signal path and interference from neighbouring networks. Sometimes you just need to move the wireless router or change wireless channel.

You could try a wifi booster device

Thanks. Think there are 2 big problems, the internet is 0.8 to 3 mbps? if that makes sense not sure bout the unit. and the size of the house. Guess I won't know until I move in but am wondering if it's going to be better to conserve the little we have rather than trying to spread it out.
