The Word version I've got is really old and I'm thinking of upgrading. I'm a student so have been looking at the software for students site for a good price.

The cheaper ones though are a licence for one or four years. Does this mean after that time it deletes itself from your computer or do you have it still but unlicensed?

Take care to check if your PC and version of windows is compatible with the version of Office that you buy. I bought a Home Use Programme version of Office 2013 only to discover that it won't work with Windows XP and that my laptop was too old to be upgraded to Windows 7.

You could forget Microsoft and use LibreOffice, OpenOffice or KingSoft, but that probably misses your desire to be up to date.

I've always found Software for Students to be the cheapest... Just a note for 'non-students, but parents', you can buy software from there as most UK schools are listed as being eligible.

The Office I bought could only be uploaded on two devices which is a pain, if you have a main computer and a couple of laptops. I haven't noticed it unload itself and I'm sure I've had mine longer than four years...

I think Viva you need to ask yourself why you need to update.

Personally I rarely use any of the high end features. I use Kingsoft Office.

It's free, it looks 99% like the old MS Office that didnt have the stupid ribbon and it opens up perfectly all my own documents and all my work documents too.

The cheapest way nowadays is about £100 from Software for Students or pay monthly via Office 365.

But don't know about you but I'd rather use a free product that does 99.9% of what I want and have £100 in my bank.

The ribbon took some time to get used to but now I wouldn't go back. Everything in Word and Excel is now so easily accessible.

It's dd who's nagging me to update. Theyve got the newvversion at school and she's keen for the same. Good to hear it won't self destruct after a year.
