i have a WD Passport external drive which has now somehow deleted all backups previously held. I no longer trust it.

So, given the somewhat ridiculous number of photos (post DS) I want to save in case my computer dies can you recommend a good provider of web space? I imagine I'll end up wanting the best part of 50gb or more so am prepared to pay some kind of monthly fee.........

Thanks

I don't trust Cloud storage solutions and there are other issues as well, e.g. solvency of the provider.

I have an external dual layer Blu-Ray writer, which will store around 50GB on a disk, IIRC. I have backup disks with family in New Zealand, a long way from anything that could happen to them here.

I originally bought a spindle of dvds, backed up all my stuff and left the dvds at my parents. Thereafter, once a month I would back up new stuff onto a DVD and post it to my mum's.

No cloud. No moving parts :)

If you are wanting a site for backups, I thoroughly recommend Crashplan.

It's pretty cheap and a real fire & forget solution. It's currently backing up my 500GB photography archive and I really don't have to think about it. As soon as photos hit the folder I've marked to back up, it uploads them automatically.

It's saved my bacon a couple of times when i've accidentally deleted stuff. You can recover even deleted files from Crashplan. So long as it's been backed up at some point, they should still have it.

Box, Dropbox, Copy, Skydrive are all geared up towards sharing files and the occasional storage. Crashplan (and it's competitors) are geared towards backups. Well worth $4 a month.
