I'm a complete techno phobe so no technical jargon pls

I've got a virus which says I've breeched about 20 laws and have to pay £100 to unlock my computer

It will let me control-alt-deltete to stop it running but keeps coming back

I've had a google and it says to restore factory settings but will this lose all my stuff saved on the computer?

Can you run your anti virus?

chickensaladagain · 27/07/2013 17:36

I'm running it now -it's taking an age

OP posts:
Chanatan · 27/07/2013 17:38

if its ukash then you may be best to resrote to factory settings, especially if you use it for home banking.

Do you have the name of the virus?
What version of Windows are you using?
Have you tried a system restore?

chickensaladagain · 27/07/2013 17:40

I use vista and I do use it for banking -do I need to make my bank aware incase there are any issues?

OP posts:
chickensaladagain · 27/07/2013 17:41

I'm still running the virus scan at the moment

OP posts:
Chanatan · 27/07/2013 17:42

Have you accessed your bank account since the virus appeared?
Do you store any bank passwords on your computer.

Chanatan · 27/07/2013 17:44

Do you have the name of the virus, this could be important,it might not be as bad as I first thought if you still have access to your pc.
What anti virus are you using?

LIZS · 27/07/2013 17:48

is Ukash ? Does it look like an official page but if you deliver £100 in vouchers to a po box then they will "unlock" your laptop ? We couldn't restart it in any mdoe to run antivirus and had to get a shop to restore it.

chickensaladagain · 27/07/2013 17:50

I've not used my bank account or card since it appeared, I use AVG anti virus and I don't store any passwords on the computer

I don't know the name of the virus -how would I find out? -the scan is 55% done and nothing come up yet

My dd was on line game playing on a site she uses 3 times a week or so

usualsuspect · 27/07/2013 17:53

Try malwarebytes.

Boot up in safe mode with networking, if you are having trouble downloading.

LIZS · 27/07/2013 17:54

is it a Police page asking for payment in UKash vouchers ?

chickensaladagain · 27/07/2013 17:55

I'm not sure if its ukash

It looks official, has my broadband providers name and my first name on it saying I have breeched one of a number of laws -possibly copyright or child pornography and that my computer is locked until I pay a fine of £100 to the state

Tells me to go to a pay point and I can click on a link to tell me where they are

I obviously haven't clicked on the link

My poor dd thought I was going to kill her but I knew it was a virus straight away -it was too 'clunky' to be official

Chanatan · 27/07/2013 17:56

Let AVG finish,if you can download malwarebytes, its free, safe and one of the most recommended tools in this sort of situation. It will find malware that your antivirus wont. After its downloaded and installed, update it and run a scan,if it finds anything,it will instruct you how to delete it.

chickensaladagain · 27/07/2013 17:56

Scan complete, says no infections or threats?

OP posts:
tribpot · 27/07/2013 17:58

I've had one of these, where it basically blocked the virus scan from running. Try malwarebytes as Chanatan suggests, but I think you should resign yourself to losing what's on it.

Chanatan · 27/07/2013 18:01

I,m the geek in our family and have dealt with quite a few of these, you may well get rid with malwarebytes,if you do,I would strongly recommend you transfer any photos, files etc to an external drive and then restore to factory settings,I woldnt do any banking on a pc that has had a virus,

usualsuspect · 27/07/2013 18:05

DS got rid of it with malwarebytes.

chickensaladagain · 27/07/2013 18:06

If I save stuff onto an external drive, will I infect my other computer with it?

OP posts:
chickensaladagain · 27/07/2013 18:15

Right malwarebytes now scanning

OP posts:
Chanatan · 27/07/2013 19:18

Any result yet.

chickensaladagain · 27/07/2013 19:44

It's still scanning, it's found 3 objects so I'm waiting until its finished to find out what

I hope to god I don't lose everything, my dd spent 5 hours creating a power point presentation and its not backed up externally!

OP posts:
usualsuspect · 27/07/2013 19:48

Encouraging if it's found some onjects.

Fingers crossed it gets rid.

chickensaladagain · 27/07/2013 19:54

4xspyware

Think I'm sorted?

OP posts:
usualsuspect · 27/07/2013 19:58

Have it healed them?

usualsuspect · 27/07/2013 19:59

Or got rid of them?
