Word, printer and some address labels !

LaChaiseVerte · 25/07/2013 17:15

I've got word and an officejet printer. Where do you get labels from, any particular sort?

Cheapest are The Works or Wilko , I normally go for 14 per sheet(posher versions like Avery have a reference no.). You set the page up accordingly and can either just input into each label or have a database in Excel or table and use the Mail Merge wizard.

DanFmDorking · 25/07/2013 18:09

It?s actually quite straight forward using MS Word 2007
Click the ?Mailings? tab (between References and Review)
Click the ?Labels? button and go from there.
See this

Brilliant, thank you. I was baffled and now I can see!

Boo, it doesn't work! I have done it all in the right template, I have checked the template matches the sticker number, but the stickers are printing out of their boxes when they come out. Any tips?

OP posts:

when you print is the paper set to the labels?

LaChaiseVerte · 26/07/2013 21:50

Sorry, what do you mean?

OP posts:
LIZS · 27/07/2013 08:46

when you go to print it will say what size paper it is using etc ? Do the labels come up there ? Sometimes you need to leave a slightly larger margin rather than butt text up to the edge of each label. I tend to do a print a page onto plain A4 first then put the label template behind just to check they won't overlap before printing onto the actual labels

LaChaiseVerte · 27/07/2013 10:27

Ah ok, no, i didn't check that - will do. Thanks so much!

Gosh, for something that was meant to be a time saver- it's proving a big faff!

When I go to print set up there are lots of options, but not labels. I tried borderless A4 but that also doesn't line up. Does anyone know the trick?

(Am going to ask to move this to Geek Stuff)

Are you printing through the Mailings > Label menu ? You can set the options for the correct type of label and print

LIZS · 30/07/2013 10:36

oh and which version of Word are you using ?

LaChaiseVerte · 30/07/2013 10:44

If you do it that way it seems to only want to print one label at a time? Not the whole page that I've written out in the template.

OP posts:
DanFmDorking · 30/07/2013 10:46

Yes, which version of Word are you using?

DanFmDorking · 30/07/2013 10:51

You shouldn't have to worry about 'print setup'.
Once the labels are correct in the Word document you:-
1 Print the labels on to plain paper
2 Hold the plain paper up against the Labels sheet to double check the alignment
3 Put the Labels in to printer and 'Print'.

DanFmDorking · 30/07/2013 10:53

3 Put the Labels sheet in to printer and 'Print'.

LaChaiseVerte · 30/07/2013 10:54

Word 2010.

I can see that there is a "return" at the bottom outside of the template, I'm guessing this could be causing the issue as the border at the bottom is much deeper than it should be. It won't let me delete it!

Hullo all,

We're going to move this to Geeky Stuff at the request of the OP.

DanFmDorking · 30/07/2013 10:57

Just test it then.
Print on to plain paper
Hold it up against the real Labels to check alignment.

LaChaiseVerte · 30/07/2013 10:58

That's what I've been doing Dan, but it all falls down at step 2 when I hold them up and they don't align. It all looks great as a word doc with the dotted lines all correct.

I am so grateful for all the help but on the verge of giving up now Sad. How do other poeple manage these things?!

Right, this is how I did it

  1. Open Word, go to Tools (top Tabs) and click on Labels?
  2. U will be presented with a Label, don?t type anything but go to the Label section and click on Options.
  3. A list of Label options will come up. On mine they are Avery labels Nos.
  4. Look around and see if you can find the size/quantity on your Label Sheet
  5. When you have found it press ok. The document will show you the label sizes in outline form. DON?T TYPE ANYTHING.
  6. Go to File and click on Save as. Then save it, not as a Template but as a document in a location were you can find it lol (desktop?)
  7. Then just fill in the addresses in the label spaces. I know there are clever ways like Mail Merge but I never could do that. Hope this helps, works for me. Best of luck.
