Text going 'wibbly' on Firefox after latest round of Windows updates - help please!

I did the usual 'windows update' and straight away Java crashed. Apparently it's an issue with the latest Java and the latest Firefox. Anyway, got that sorted, but now I have lines of text on my webpages doing something odd - they are sort of 'shadowed'. If anyone remembers the old typewriters with correction ribbons, it's like when you've tried to correct a line of type but had the paper very slightly out of alignment so the letters are still mostly visible with a few bits missing.

If I page down until the offending text goes off the top of the screen then page back up, it's all ok again. But then some other text will suddenly go...

This is a known issue with Firefox and certain Windows updates. There are some workarounds but they are kind of fiddly and not very user friendly and also not always reliable. Easy things you can try is to either uninstall the particular offending Windows update (Google for its number), or as a workaround, turn off hardware acceleration in Firefox (Firefox button in top left - Options - Advanced - untick 'use hardware acceleration when available'). This isn't guaranteed to work, so if it doesn't do anything you might as well turn it back on. It's also possible that it'll slow down your browsing depending on the spec of your PC; if it fixes the problem but slows things down you'll have to decide what annoys you more...

Thanks. I can cope with the wibbly writing, it's still readable. I guess I'll just live with it until the next round of updates which will fix this but cause yet another conflict Hmm

Try turning off the hardware acceleration - if it works it's a 2min fix and you may not see any performance decrease at all! And it's easily turned back on if you do or it doesn't work.

I tried it and it didn't work.

For disabling Hardware Acceleration to work, you have to fully restart Firefox.

If this still does not help you, it maybe due to you having a high resolution display? Firefox v22 is apparently now following display scaling options, which may upset your text.

For instructions on how to revert the text scaling to be dictated by your browser, check reply #2
