I'll second the IPad mini DD (10) got one for xmas and she loves it, it has been worth every single penny.

landofsoapandglory · 06/07/2013 16:57

iPad Mini. I have an iPad, as do the DC. DH has an iPad mini and I wish I had one, it is so light and portable compared to the iPad.

Nexus 7 or 10

Defo go Apple - either the full size or the mini. Mini is cheaper (fairly obvious that one, lol) and more portable. Brilliant for reading as its that bit smaller/lighter etc.

Personally I would avoid the kindle fire but another option would be the samsungs.

I'm apple through and through but android market is ver popular too.

Just a thought - maybe go with whichever ones her school has??? This is usually apple as schools can get offers and support packages from apple.

My kids have a 7 inch samsung galaxy2 and actually it's fab. Nexus 7 if you have the bit extra money.

I have been through and outgrown the strangle hold of apple gadgetry. I'm so cross that my carefully looked after ipad1 will be pretty much obsolete after the next IOS update in the autumn.

Paying half the money for a decent android tablet that is more flexible on the whole and doesn't tie you to a whole " ecosystem" from one retailer seems like a better deal ( evnn if it is also obsolete after a time).

Ipad minis have some issues re WIFI signal strength too, google it.A knowledgeable geeky guy was returning his 2nd to John Lewis when I was waiting for something. Apparently he couldn't use it in te garden when at the ssame location his sons ipad1 picked up near full signal.

My kids use their tablets for amazing stuff. DD2 ( who we thought only played/facebooked/read fanfic) was reading a friends english homework as she'd asked for comments ( friends at a different school) and she has a recipie file now. DS has had reams of AS past papers when we went away at Easter etc etc

Theas18 · 07/07/2013 23:04

Kindle fire is as tied to one ecosystem as apple gadgets I'm afraid (unless you root it..) wouldn't go for that.

Interesting about apple schools tie ins..... I don't feel very happy about that ( Dh school are thinking they may do it) . Fortunately the kids schools haven't.

If you can go for an ipad or ipad mini, my son had an android tablet for Christmas and its so much harder work than the ipad. Needless to say he still hogs my ipad so I wish we'd just bought him one in the first place - it would have worked out cheaper as we will probably be getting him an ipad for Christmas this year Smile

My eldest DS recently bought a Nexus 7 having saved for 2 years - he's delighted with it and he uses it in a similar way to how your DS hopes to. Good battery life too. We are an apple household in the main, but this has been just the right thing.

Quackster · 09/07/2013 00:02

I love Apple stuff, but you can do so much more with the Nexus. Cheaper as well for great specs.

My DCs have had their IPads for nearly four years and still use them all the time. The eldest use them at Uni. We have never had a single problem with any of them.

The only thing I would suggest is that you consider getting a 32GB version to future proof it. He could own it for years and 16GB can be a bit limiting if he starts downloading movies etc.

We bought all ours from John Lewis with the extended guarentee.
