I want an iPad - never had one.

Do I spend the cash on latest model or get a second generation one.

Is it a false economy to get an old one

Or you can get a new Android tablet that is new to the market and cheaper than an old Apple.

I never really understood why people are so eager to choose yesterday's technology, either iPad or iPhone, simply because it's an Apple.

Bit simplistic HabbaDabba - iPad may get a lot of hype and mentions (similarly the iPod and iPhone).

I have a mix of kit, Android phones, tablet, etc, linux, Windows and several (old, like 5+ years) iMac.

While I personally think Apple is too costly, and to some degree puts user in a straightjacket, Android (or rather, mobile network-locked phones) can similarly restrict user.

Sorry OP, best read review/ comparison of iPad 2 with 'Retina display iPad' for advice (or some user may post their views).

Have you set a budget limit?

Don't get a 1st gen, ours is starting to show its age now, starting to freeze up, some apps don't work properly or aren't supported, the browser randomly closes down etc.

Maybe get a Mini to cut costs a bit?

I have a 3rd gen. I love it, and DH who is the household geek is very impressed with the quality of the screen over earlier models. So if you want to play games, photo editing, video, that sort of thing, it might be worth paying more. Also I have noticed more apps are only stating they are compatible with the most current model. I think that is true of most tech.

We also have an android Eeepad and a Playbook. Having seen what is available on these, it tends to be far more limited, often more expensive and the screens are nowhere near as good. Not always, but that's my experience.

DH came home with a Mini from work last week and it is delicious. So thin and light, great screen, perfect if you want portable. I was very impressed with it. For small you also have things like the Kindle Fire, but then you are tied to Amazon. That's going to be an issue no matter what you choose though.

Personally I am very impressed with the iPad. I would go with a mini or the 3rd gen depending on finances. I also find that web browsing in general is better with Apple.

Go and have a look somewhere that stocks them all and see what you think, in the end there's no point buying something you aren't happy with and which suits your needs.

You can get a reconditioned iPad 2 direct from apple on their website. Comes with a guarantee. That's what I would do. Or get a new mini.

I have the 2nd generation which I bought a year ago just as the 3rd came out. I'm on it alot for web browsing and regret not getting the 3rd generation one - picture on my iPad 2 is good but a tiny bit blurred compared to the picture on the retina ones (3rd and 4th) and it does annoy me sometimes. May get the 4th one when it comes down in price a little, hopefully this year when the 5th ones out, and I'm lusting after a MacBook, too.

Don't bother with a 1st generation one and think carefully about what storage you need. I'd also advise having a play with some at your local Apple store.
