Problems with Word

I have come across a problem I have never encountered before and wondered if anyone can help.

I have a series of documents in Word 2007 that have been created by changing a couple of words and doing a "save as". I gave a couple of them the wrong name and have tried to go back and overwrite them. It wouldn't let me do this, telling me the document was open (it wasn't). So I did another "save as" and I do at least now have all the docs with the right name.

However, now I cannot change the names of the originals, nor delete them, nor move them even. I've even shut down my computer and started it up again. Doesn't make any difference. I am completely flummoxed.

It's not the be all and end all of problems but it is bugging me (and messing up my nice neat folder). Any ideas anyone?

Without wanting to talk down to you, when you are in the folder, but not the document, get the documents to show as thumbnails rather than as a list, then right click on the one you want to name change, select from the list and a box should pear for you to type a new name into.

Is this on a work or home PC? If work (or if you have a client/server network at home), are the documents saved in a network folder? It could be that you don't have modify/delete permissions on that folder (and/or files within it).

This is on a home computer but the document originated at work so it might be something to do with permissions. I brought it home on a stick.

I tried the thumbnail right click - it didn't make any difference.

If you can't delete the files then can you at least move them?

Nope - won't let me move them either. I can't do anything with them. I am resigned to let them sit unbothered until I can speak to our IT lady at work on Monday.

I think permissions are usually inherited from the folder, so if they were on a memory stick I'm almost certain they won't have the same restrictions as in a network folder.

However, if it is folder permissions, it would prevent you moving them as it involves a copy function and a delete function. Is it possible just to copy them to a folder on your computer? (Not move or cut.)
