'Design' software for non designers - what's best?

I'm a graphic designer so I use industry standard software (Adobe Creative Suite) but I have a client who needs certain items that can be edited by his staff. We have tried producing these in Word (which I hate!) but it doesn't offer enough capabilities for making the documents look professional. Is there any kind of halfway house? Something that won't look cheap and home-done but is simple enough for a non-designery person to work with.

What are they aiming to do, ie what type of document needs editing?

If you are looking at a desktop publishing kind of thing look at Serif (I believe they also do other graphics software) they do free trial versions of their software which I found quite good for using when clients want something editable on a basicish level.

Well for example it might be an opening hours poster where each store needs to input their own details or labels on shelves where prices vary from branch to branch.
