Using Iphone on PAYG. Bad idea or not?

DH ugraded his phone so I can take his older Iphone if I want. He got it unlocked and it works with my SIM now.

Just wondering if I can use it on WIFI at home and as a phone elsewhere and not have it use up all my credit checking in, connecting to internet etc?

Does anyone know about this stuff?

Thanks

Watching with interest, as I have an iphone and have incurred random charges for stuff I do not understand.

I have a number of phones at home with no SIM in them, just using them with wi-fi either from home broadband or with my (Three network) mobile when out.

I should think you'll have no problem using the Wi-Fi facility only at home. There may be a setting for 'data roaming' or similar (sorry, just going from what it is called on my Android phones - I don't have an iPhone) you can disable so it doesn't attempt to get data from your mobile network service. Otherwise a tiny amount of data could cost 2 quid from any credit you have.

However, you mention the phone is unlocked, so it may work on a different network where you are not on contract but top up when you need, and could therefore have data when you felt you wanted it (eg GiffGaff at about 12 pounds). Asda's PAYG SIM 'holds' credit (no daft 'expires after 30 days', though add-on options you can buy do), so that may give you an emergency facility, too.

I use one on GiffGaff, I pay £10 a month for a package called a Goodybag, for that I get 250mins, unlimited texts, 1GB data, which is more than enough for me. Have to pay extra via a normal PAYG credit for picture messaging, 0845 numbers, but I just keep a few pounds normal credit on it for that and hardly ever have to top it up. All of this is non-contract.
