I have got a new nexus and I want to know the best way to protect it against viruses. Should I pay mcafee to allow me to install my pc protection also on my tablet or is there a better way?

Is the free software any good?

Incidently I dictated this post using voice recognition software on my nexus. it's good isn't it?

Not sure about your original question (sorry!) but can I ask you a question please?

You mentioned the voice recognition software - how good is this? Does it control the whole tablet? My Dad is blind and has voice recognition software on his PC but is thinking of getting a laptop instead. I think a tablet would be better if it was able to be wholly used by his voice though, as then it would be more portable.

He currently uses the 'speech to text' facility on the Kindle, and I am wondering if the Nexus would be able to read the Kindle books to him instead?

Many thanks if you can help!

The voice recognition software that I have used only lets you write without typing. It doesn't control other functions, and it needs to be activated by pressing a little icon, so wouldn't be helpful for visual impairment. However, there is something on android called Talkback, which is an accessibility aid for visual impairment. I don't know anything about how good that is, I'm afraid. I hope someone else might come on the thread who knows about it. Smile Smile

That's useful, thanks! I'll have to do a bit of research on that. Smile

I downloaded the free Norton but a geeky friend told me there are practically no viruses
Apple hardly gets any viruses, apparently hackers hate Microsoft and that's why its targeted so any free app should be enough
my friend has had his for over a year, used daily and without any virus protection

I use lookout on mine (its in the play store) its actually for mobile phones (I think), but seems to work fine on the tablet. There are others available eg Avast but Lookout is the one I found that actually worked, and for the features I use, its free.

There is lots of malicious software it is possible to get, but mostly only if you download apps from non-official sources ie not from the Google Play store (although some stuff slips through there too). I believe Amazon apps is pretty good too.

Thanks. Very helpful.
