Not sure where to begin as seems to be quite a range but little information available . Was thinking of some for dh so he can move around the house/garden while listening to music from the stereo. Budget £50 - £75, needs to work with traditional amplifier (do you just use the jack point for the transmitter unit ?).

Best be sure you have a 3.5mm socket (or did you mean a traditional amplifier with a 1/4" headphone socket ?)

Sorry if that sounds a dumb question but older, "traditional" kit may have an older headphone socket.

To be frank a reasonable pair of headphones in the 30-40 pound range and an MP3 player might be an option, as one day any vinyl or cassette from the stereo may fail. If it's a CD being played then there are many free/cheap ways to transfer to MP3.

Personally wouldn't bother to spend OTT cash for an Apple iPod because then you'd need to use iTunes to move files into it. Most MP3 players plug in on USB and you just copy and paste music files (and/or video depending on device) onto the player. I paid a tenner about 3 years ago for a DigiMate player which handles photos, audio, video and has an FM radio and dictaphone functions.

More recently (to have 8 GB of capacity) I paid 15 or 16 quid in Asda (it was reduced on a clearance ticket, but simply an example to show how much such devices can be bought for, esp when compared with Apple gear - however nice that is!).

Current Sony ones (MDR CD170) probably have a 3.5mm jack, the amp isn't that old (less than 10 years). He already has an ipod but also a vast collection of cds (and vinyl) but needs to sit adjacent to listen to whereas be good if he had the option to move around.

hmm , asked in audio shop today and was told that they might not work from room to room/outside as range relates to direct line of sight of transmitter. Anyone know if that is right or can recommend ones with a strong enough signal to receive through walls ?!
