Tried to buy the likes of Angry Birds Space and Star Wars, having already got the original version, Season and Rio , but apparently not compatible. Would a software update (suggested for Temple Run) solve the problem or are these designed to only work on later modelas, ipad etc ?

Software update should work Wink

I am in this situation with a second generation iPod ...suddenly nothing will update and we have the most up to date software for that model Sad. As the software is improving so developers are taking advantage of that meaning their upgrades often won't work on older models having previously done so. We have had this with Angry Birds and Netflix for example. Apple don't make things any easier by identifying apps for older versions of software...a bit remiss IMHO as older models are still very much in circulation and in some cases people have bought them new less than 5 years ago. I feel they make it hard to find the right apps to get people buying newer versions.

In your case a software update will sort most things out hopefully while 1st and 2nd generation models will still act as MP3 players etc but be less useful for many apps.

In our case my exH has kindly bought DS a new 4th generation model for Xmas....the brand new 5th generation is only in 32gb or 64gb so is out of the question. The 4th gen 16gb was £149 and will hopefully last several years. Guess I will gain a 2nd generation MP3 player which is fine as its all I need.Smile

When we try to install the apps a message says minimum OS 4.3 required but the i-touch software will only update to 4.2.1. Does this mean they aren't ever going to be compatible ?

Having the same problem. My 3 year old DD 'very helpfully' deleted a couple of my apps, which were working fine and when I've tried to reload them I am getting an error message saying I need to have iOS something! Plus, our laptop is broken at mo, so cant do an update. Grrrr.

I had the same problem with my 1st gen iPod touch a year ago. Or maybe the year before. It's still working perfectly but it has been left behind software-wise and it sickens me. Planned obsolescence at play, I think.

Only advice is to not update any apps you have already on it or they may stop working. Trial and error on buying new apps.
