If I want to read books, which Kindle do I want?

The paperwhite or the plain........3G or not 3G?

Does it matter?

I want it because my hands hurt holding books that are much heavier than a mills & boon - haven't read a hard back in years

Depends. Do you want to read in bed in the dark? if so, paperwhite.

Are you likely to be on a train and think, damn, i must read that just released book NOW! If so, then 3G. If you're more patient organised than me then just wifi.

Kindles are great :)

KatyMac · 01/12/2012 23:08

I thik there would probably be enough on the Kindle to last me as long as the train journey wasn't longer than a fortnight Wink

So no 3G

Now paperwhite or not; is it hard to read when it's paperwhite?

Any other comments before I order?

The kindle readers are designed to be easy to read, paperwhite or standard. As Gwendoline said, the paperwhites are meant to help with varying light conditions.

There are also a few other differences amazon mention here.

Whichever you choose, you will love it, I'm sure. They're so light and easy to use.

I have Kindle keyboard with cover, including the built in light. if you have trouble holding a book heavier than a small paperback then a normal kindle with cover and light might be too heavy for you. If the paper white can be read in the dark I'd go with that. I am assuming that you want to read in the dark!

nannynick · 02/12/2012 14:48

I'm perfectly happy with my early generation Kindle, not sure which version I have possibly the second one. It has the keyboard and it is NOT paperwhite.
Mine does not have any built in light, I have a cover for it which has a pop out light, though I don't use that very often. Nearest comparison with what Amazon currently sells is the Kindle Keyboard 3G, though mine is just WiFi.

Children's books can have pictures which don't show up well - so if using for children the Kindle Fire may be better but if it's just for you, then any version will be fine.

TrillsCarolsOutOfTune · 02/12/2012 14:49

If you just want to read books you DO NOT want a Kindle Fire - it's a lit up shiny screen like a computer, not a flat paper-like screen.

TrillsCarolsOutOfTune · 02/12/2012 14:50

I have done the must get next book right now thing before on the train and told my phone to be a wifi hub so that my Kindle could connect to the internet.

I have skillz.

nannynick · 02/12/2012 14:59

So is the Kindle Fire more like an iPad? If so probably not what you want for reading, I like the dull grey background of Kindle Keyboard, then using a light above if necessary.

KatyMac · 02/12/2012 15:26

Thanks - so the ordinary one is OK & the paperwhite might be better for reading at night

If i was getting a new kindle now i would get a paperwhite

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 02/12/2012 16:38

I have the touch screen non lit kindle which I love. Thats not available now so on that basis I would go for the Paperwhite. Although having seen dh's, the back light would be pretty much turned off anyway because it seems very bright to me iyswim.

The Paperwhite does have a lovely tactile feel to it and it is very easy to navigate. The only thing I don't like is the back light, but DH does seems to have it very brightConfused

I read in lamplight and see no need for a light on mine at all but DH struggled with his last kindle without a light.

PedroPonyLikesCrisps · 02/12/2012 17:49

On the 3G side, I like having it on mine because I tend to read on several devices (phone, tablet, Kindle) and having the 3G means I can sync the Kindle to the furthest page wherever I may be. But if you are only going to read on the Kindle then you probably don't need it.

KatyMac · 02/12/2012 20:11

Fingers crossed I like it then

I have gone for no 3G paperwhite

I have an older WiFi keyboard. Super lightweight and battery life. The new Fire seems to defeat all the advantages of the original Kindle if you just want to read books. I think you nade the right decision - hope you enjoy it!

I also have the Kindle app on my phone so if I'm out and about I always have my 'book' with me. And then when I get into bed at night my Kindle is there and it synchs to wherever I left off on my phone via the WiFi. I have never found the need for 3G. Usually if you are going on holiday it is not a surprise so you can download before you go :o

KatyMac · 07/12/2012 07:24

Well it's arrived but DH says I can't have it until Christmas Hmm

OP posts:
GwendolineMaryLacedwithBrandy · 07/12/2012 07:55

I hate when that happens. My mother has bought me a Pandora bracelet for Christmas which I've been wearing for a month Xmas Grin

KatyMac · 07/12/2012 18:30

I'll be pointing out that we go away 5 days before Christmas so I will have to take at least 5 books --that will change his mind-i

It's so frustrating you can't buy Kindle books as presents

OP posts:
TrillsCarolsOutOfTune · 08/12/2012 10:37

You can buy really specific amounts of Amazon credit, I think, and say "THIS ONE" when you send it :)

KatyMac · 08/12/2012 22:24

Oh interesting - I'll investigate

I have some Kindle books on my laptop - I guess they will transfer over

I've got the kindle keyboard and its very easy on my eyes and I love the fact hat I can listen to audio books on it.

If I was buying a new ereader I wouldn't buy a kindle though, I would get the kobo glo. You can read in the dark, aren't tied to one retailer and can borrow library books easily.
