Laptop screen has what looks like cracks under the surface, with purple oozing out

Does this mean anything to anyone, and do you know if it's worth taking somewhere to get it mended or is it totally buggered?

it's almost like purple ink is spreading beneath the surface of the screen - obviously very difficult to read the screen under bits where there is a splodge! thank you for any info....

My dh trod on my screen and broke it. They are replaceable- they just replace the whole lid of the laptop, and I think it cost about 60 pounds.

that sounds hopeful, ami, .. when your DH trod on your screen, did it get strange purple lines or was it totally smashed?

You could probably pick up a new screen off eBay, but someone has definitely broken it!

SunWukong · 20/09/2012 10:33

It's not worth the cash those things cost a fortune, just connect it to a monitor.

NigellasGuest · 20/09/2012 10:43

have looked at the link Mona - it's definitely not the battery thank goodness, that sounds really quite scary - it's the screen - it does look like it can be repaired.
if i pick up a new screen from eBay I would not have a clue how to replace it but perhaps it would come with instructions.....

You'd probably have to take the laptop apart, my brother never bothers replacing broken screens not worth it, customers just opt for removal of the whole thing and using the laptop with a monitor. Tho some makes have important parts behind the screen.

NigellasGuest · 20/09/2012 11:44

i don't have a monitor.
They sell new screens on Ebay for around £45 and there are links to instructions on how to remove and replace. Could be the way forward here!

DH replaced the screen on my laptop using a YouTube tutorial - it took about half an hour, and most of that was trying to take the plastic frame off without snapping it stupid fiddly thing.

It's definitely worth replacing the screen. They're an easy fix and for a small cost you have a fully working, portable unit again. It is a little fiddly to do so if you don't feel confident you could just buy the part and ask a local computer repair person how much they would charge for just labour. It shouldn't be much as it only takes (someone who has done it before) around 10 mins to swap a broken laptop screen over. :)
