Under 100 coins, 1tb or more, looking at buffalo and wd, Samsung has caught my eye with their 3 year warranty.

I'd rather it be portable but price and reliability are the main thing.

Any thoughts?

Oh is that the telly thing? We have an HDMI WDTV thing which is great, can watch issued and store loads of box sets. We are watching Roseanne at the moment and it's closer to my life than I am comfortable with Grin

'issued' = iplayer

No no external hard drives for connecting to pcs and copying files over.

Wd is western digital.

Some of the 'portable' (by which I assume you mean one which has no mains adaptor to power it) need 2 USB sockets to provide sufficient current.

Most of the portable ones seem to have a 'rugged' case for yobs geeks to be able to throw take the drive in their car boot backpack round to a yob's friend's house. It just adds to the cost.

I'd be happier to spend a bit more for the 3 year warranty, esp if you plan to use it for backups of data (but would also suggest writing DVDs now and then, too).

There used to be 'lifetime warranty' but as drives are getting bigger, fewer and fewer go past ONE year, so THREE is far from usual.

I know, I've no experience of Samsung drives but they must be confident to stick a 3 year on em, but they are more expensive then buffalo.

Oh dear

Might be worth checking on hotukdeals.com to see if there are comments about particular drives... sometimes I've spotted people comment on finding the WD Eco range drives inside particular backup boxes, and cheaper than you can buy the same Eco range drive from online stores.

Aboutlastnight - no need to get your coat - WDTV obviously may use similar disk storage inside, but some of those boxes just convert a data stream (pulled from a PC or server in your home) to give a high def picture to watch on the TV.

Nobody learns without making a mistake now and then, so don't get flustered!

I know when I pop into Pedant's Corner that my English grammar will be under some extra level of scrutiny, so I tend to make sentences much shorter and to the point when if I do post there (!)

I'm not even sure if it's worth it tbh, 1 year warranty onmost doesn't look like they're confident in the products, if i go buy a load of cheap blanks from the supermarket i dare say they will last longer then 3 years. For the price of the things i could replace knackered dvd burners 4 times over.

Oh for the days of the 5 year plus warranty.

Western Digital my Passport - good small size means less knocking over etc. It is advisable to keep 2 backups of everything.

Most things are everywhere anyway, my music is all on my creative men vision m as well as the pc, the anime is on two pc's.

Do you know anything about buffalo? They used yo bea linux storage thing but I'm not sure if these things are the same people.
