iphone vs Galaxy S III - which would you recommend?

I'm planning to change from a blackberry to one of these. Most friends seem to be in the iphone camp but I've heard great things about the Galaxy.

I am not the most technologically advanced, but would use it mostly for replying to group facebook posts, texting, phoning, taking and uploading photos and videos (mostly of DS). I'd like to be able to back-up these photos onto our laptop and a memory stick. WE have an ipad (used a bit) and an ipod (not used much) and a non-Apple laptop, if you think this affects the decision at all.

If this has already been debated to death on another thread, please feel free to point me in its direction!

Thanks in advance.

Galaxy SIII without a doubt.

You'd mostly use it for stuff that means you are looking at the screen - it has a bigger screen.

Android phones are also much more customisable, you can choose what internet browser to use and what keyboard to type with and all sorts of other things. iPhones are much more locked down.

If you want to back up photos get Dropbox - you can set your phone to automatically back up to it.

I would say Samsung or HTC one x

Wait a week or so though - the new iPhone details are rumoured to be out next week so prices on other phones might drop a bit

I've have an iphone 4 for about 9 months. My husband got the Galaxy SIII on Saturday, and I am well jealous! It's lovely.

Though the iphone 5 will be out soon - so may trump the Galaxy.

Trouble is, you only ever have the best phone for about a month, until the next model comes out :(

Thanks all - much appreciated. I'll hold on for a week or so and then make a decision!

ive got the s3 , its sleek and great for the internet due to the big screen , I hardly go on the pc anymore ! Its super fast and overall one of the best phones on the market ! I find with Iphones they are like marmite , you either love them or hate them . I hate them, you can do a lot more with android in my opinion .

Love my iPhone. Version 5 supposed to be out on 12th sept[rumour]

niceguy2 · 08/09/2012 19:25

The S3 is undoubtly the superior phone. It's got a much bigger screen, goes like poo off a shovel and has more bells & whistles than you can shake a stick at. I have the Galaxy Note which is very similar but with an even bigger screen. I handed down my iphone 4 to my daughter.

BUT

In your case I'd be seriously tempted to get either the iphone 5 (announcement due next week I think) or the cheaper 4S.

Why?

Because firstly many of your friends already have iphones. Which means you can take advantage of iMessage, Facetime (maybe).

In addition you already have an ipad & ipod meaning any apps/music you've already purchased can share with your iphone.

If you are not the most technically minded then I'd still argue the iphone is the easier to use. Android is very customisable but as a result there are so many options that it can be bewildering.

The key question in my mind is if you look at both phones, which screen do you prefer? I wanted a big screen because I usually use my phone to surf the web, occasionally as a phone. But others prefer the svelte size of the iphone as it's more pocketable. The S3 is somewhere in the middle.

Galaxy SIII I LOVE mine! It's a fab piece of equipment IMO

I think if you have a lot of apple stuff, and are used to how apple works and like it, then an iphone is fine. If you don't, then the android phones are ace. DH has the Galaxy S2, which is ace (though I much prefer HTC sense to the Samsung skin(?)). I just think that apple stuff feels functionally very different, and if you're used to a certain level of flexibility it can be hard to get into the apple way of doing things.

Thanks all. Some useful inputs here.

As a by the by, I'm currently reading Walter Isaacson's biograpahy on Steve Jobs which isn't helping the decision making process. As I read it, I swing between massive admiration for him and his products (thereby making me veer towards the iPhone) and incredulity that he could be such a nob at times (thereby swinging me to the samsung). Perhaps someone else needs to make the decision for me!
