DS wants an I Pad - would he like a Blackberry Playbook

Having just seen the reduced price of the BB Playbook on another thread, it seems to be a fantastic price compared to an I Pad.

DS is fairly tech-savvy and loves all the latest gadgets and am wondering whether he would be happy with one of these instead.

Was wondering if one of you in the know, would kindly explain (in language I can understand :) ) what the differences between the two are.

I don't know anything about the technical differences - but I do know that RIM, the company that make Blackberry, are struggling massively, which could mean that their products aren't terribly well supported, or the apps/programmes for their playbook aren't as available/as good.

LegoAcupuncture · 26/08/2012 21:52

Ipads have different apps to Blackberry, who use the Android Android store, Ipod use Itunes.

I have an ipad and also an android device, much prefer my iapd.

They are releasing a smaller Ipad somepoint this year which is going to be under £200.

sb6699 · 26/08/2012 21:53

Funnily enough when spoke to DH about it, he mentioned that they were struggling and was wondering whether it was because the product wasnt as good given that Apple seem to be booming.

My DS is a good lad and he would never tell us he was disappointed but obviously I dont want his christmas present to go down like a lead balloon.

I would not get a BB playbook instead of an iPad and definitely not if I did not have a BB smartphone

1-the apps are nowhere near as prevalent on the playbook - apple (like it or not) have loads of apps available very cheaply / free
2-not sure if the technical stuff that was going on with the playbook is still going on which meant it didn't work as planned
3-parent company (RIM) having problems

sb6699 · 26/08/2012 21:57

Oooh, thats interesting about the smaller one Lego.

Was hoping to get it in early, but will hold off till its released.

Its really the price thats holding me back, but £200 might be do-able if DH gets his bonus.

My BIL, who is the be all and know all of anything Apple, says September. I am hoping so as want to get DS2 one for Christmas.

PedroPonyLikesCrisps · 26/08/2012 22:11

As few clarifications, Play book does not run Android. BlackBerry have their own store which is well behind Android and Apple. There are rumours of a mini iPad but a price of £200 is highly unlikely. Apple are all about the brand, to offer a tablet this cheap would both dilute their pompous, elitist image and destroy sales of the full size iPad. Industry analysts are predicting a price point around £350.

The problem with the Apple brand is that they brainwash people (and unfortunately, especially children) into not accepting anything else. This is part of the reason I will never buy an Apple product. Personally, it sounds like the Nexus 7 would suit you great, it's a smaller (7") tablet (like the iPad mini will be) but is only £159 and has exceptional specs for the price.

daisydoodoo · 26/08/2012 22:15

I just got the nexus 7 and it's fab much prefer it to the iPad. I've just gone over to a Samsung galaxy s3 rather than wait for the iPhone 5. It's much better than the iPhone as well.

sb6699 · 26/08/2012 22:46

So the consensus is that he won't want the bb playbook.

I'm glad you clarified that about the android thing Pedro.

I've bought dds (who are younger) htc flyers second hand (but new in the box). They run on android and I've had a wee play around on them and thought they were the bees knees. The lady only charged me 100 each which I thought was a bargain

If we get ds an I pad it will need to be second hand so now I'm leaning towards the nexus - my head is spinning :)

OP posts:
sb6699 · 26/08/2012 22:50

Oh if any of you think there's anything I should know about the flyer, I would welcome your thoughts.

It's the 32 gb, 3g and WiFi version (i read that off the box, haven't all of a sudden started to understand the lingo :) )

PedroPonyLikesCrisps · 26/08/2012 22:57

Nothing wrong with the flyer. Been around a little while now though, but sounds like you got a good price there! Still would point you at the Nexus though as it's brand new and competitively priced!

sb6699 · 26/08/2012 23:05

The little ones don't really mind yet about it being the most up to date.

They just want to draw and play games!

Dd1 had been asking for a kindle like mine but when I saw the flyers for sale I thought she could do more with it and I could download the kindle app for her (sounds easier than it actually will be with my limited skills)

Thanks all for the help, think we will hold off getting the iPad and see how much the newer one will cost - have a feeling it might be out of our price range, if that's the case will probably get him a nexus.

RIM got a bit fucked over due to the service fuck up they had that led to everything being stuffed for a few days, there main market (businessmen) walked away at that point.

They still have a strong following among kids who love the free messaging service.

I can't wait for my Samsung Galaxy Tab2 to turn up.

BIWI · 27/08/2012 09:11

I think they were struggling already before that, SunWukong - but that outage really didn't help matters!

Glittertwins · 27/08/2012 19:32

Yes, RIM were in trouble before that huge outage.

poeia · 27/08/2012 19:48

OP, we have both in our house, the iPad IMO is far, far better than the play book...totally different experience.
Hth

GothAnneGeddes · 27/08/2012 20:10

I have a PlayBook. It's lovely in lots of ways but let down by lack of apps, although it does everything I want it to and has good games, a child may find it disappointing.

Would definitely recommend the nexus, lots of apps for a great price.

Also agree with Apple being branding over substance, I also cannot stand the "walled garden" aspect itunes everything etc.

marykat2004 · 05/09/2012 14:14

Does the Nexus support flash? I'm also looking for a tablet type thing for my 8 yo too.. thanks

NoComparison · 05/09/2012 14:28

I don't know about the technical differences but IME (as a parent and as a child) it's better to give something completely different than a cheaper version of what they really wanted (even if it is practically the same and does do all the same things)

foad · 05/09/2012 14:35

Love the BB playbook BUT I don't use apps. I just use it as a mini laptop and browser etc.

SunWukong · 05/09/2012 19:03

People are shouting far to much about nexus, I think it's fishy on paper it doesn't seem that amazing compared to other similar small tabs, I think the Google nuts are out in force to drum up the hype. Not that the thing is bad it's made by Asus and they are good.

Loving my Samsung tab2

Glittertwins · 05/09/2012 21:48

Adobe are pulling Flash out of Android OS gear.

Lilyloo · 05/09/2012 21:54

I love my playbook but just use it to browse the net. It's size means it is great to carry around with you.
However the dc's love the ipad, the apps are 100% better , there is very little choice on the playbook.
