HTC One X, Samsung Galaxy, something else?

I'm eligible for an upgrade on my phone contract.

I've seen the tariff I want, £18.50 a month, instead of the £20 I pay now. Unlimited texts, some minutes, bit of internet. All I need. Lovely. 18 months on o2 (who I've been with since I was 16 - 22 now).

I have a HTC Wildfire S atm but want something with a bigger screen. So was looking at the HTC One X (I'd pay £179 for the phone) or the Samsung Galaxy S2 (I'd pay £104 for the phone).

I'd prefer Android. I've had an iPhone before, not a huge fan tbh.

Is there some brilliant, big screened phone I've overlooked?
And, cheekily, will being with o2 for years upon years possibly get me a better contract for not so much - my ideal one is £32 a month but that's not an option at the moment).

I have the HTC One V which is cheaper and I upgraded from a Wildfire as well. Does everything I want and much cheaper. You probably won't get a good retention deal from O2!

Have a look at www.mobiles.co.uk they do really good deals

niceguy2 · 20/08/2012 18:57

The OneX is a good phone but apparently battery life on it isn't great. Also not helped by the fact they've done an Apple and sealed the battery in.

So as long as you don't mind charging it daily and it only just making it through the day with light use then I'd say go for it.

How many minutes etc are you looking for? There are sometimes some cracking deals out there. The S3 is the best phone of the moment. The One X is HTC's equivalent to it but it's not quite as good as the S3.

LollipopViolet · 20/08/2012 19:39

To be honest, I text more than call, so 200 minutes would be more than enough. I'm looking at the S3, maybe S2, because my Wildfire's battery life is shocking and my boyfriend says the One X is as bad!

Thanks niceguy2 for the info "sealed the battery in" re HTC One X.

Reduces its desirability (for me) considerably.

LollipopViolet · 20/08/2012 20:55

Hmm, well, I'm liking the look of the Samsung. Whatever I do will have to wait a few months, as I need the money to pay for the phone, as on the contracts I can afford, they're all £100+.

LollipopViolet · 24/08/2012 10:41

Right, I think I've come to a decision.

I think, even though there's a huge price difference, it might be the s3. The fact HTC have sealed the battery in, coupled with the fact I've had to do battery pulls on my Wildfire, is swaying me.

I just wish, on the contract I want, the phone wasn't £249, although for £6 a month more, it goes down to £169...

On the other hand....having a phone with a sealed battery which barely lasts a day is going to be a HUGE pain in the backside to live with for two years!

There were some great deals around a while back but they seem to have dried up. If I were you I'd hang on a little while until Apple announce the iphone 5 next month. You can bet there will be deals galore as everyone competes against the iphone for monthly sales.

JarethTheGoblinKing · 24/08/2012 11:23

One X - amazing phone. Battery isn't as bad as some will have you believe either.

JarethTheGoblinKing · 24/08/2012 11:25

NetworkGuy - you also can't add extra memory to it.

LollipopViolet · 24/08/2012 12:49

Now I'm just plain confused!

Seriously considering going by my wallet and getting the One X. My boyfriend has had no problems, and a friend with a One S has had no issues either.

The ability to make a decision like this is something I strive for, yet never achieve lol Grin

It is a fantastic phone, and loads more internal memory than the previous HTCs. The battery on mine lasts all day with medium FB/MN use. If I want to use it for listening to music then it does need charging more often.

I do leave 3G switched off though, that probably saves the battery life quite a bit.

The camera's incredible too, and if you're with O2 you'll get 25gb dropbox storage Grin

PedroPonyLikesCrisps · 26/08/2012 22:34

Niceguy, there won't be deals galore on the iPhone5, Apple fix all the pricing at launch and they will be well overpriced too. If the rumours are accurate the S3 will still have the edge over the iPhone in terms of spec.

OP, If it's big screens you're after, the Galaxy Note 2 should be out next month, Samsung's new flagship 5.5" beast! Other than that, I can vouch for the One X, battery life is fine, it easily copes with a day's moderate to heavy use. No SD card slot is less of a problem than it used to be with all the cloud storage options and large internal memory storage. Personally I think the One X still out does the S3 but only just and only because of HTC Sense!

CumberdickBendybatch · 26/08/2012 22:37

Pedro - I think NiceGuy meant everybody else would be competing. Obv iPhone 5 will be extortionate when its released but the hype will promote interest in the smart phone market as a whole

PedroPonyLikesCrisps · 26/08/2012 22:47

retracts iPhone comment :-)

LollipopViolet · 26/08/2012 22:50

Well, I went into a phone shop and had a little play :)

I'm going for the One X, the S3 just didn't feel as nice to hold and that home button feels really cheap and plasticky. Going by a few friends who've also had no problems with various HTC's, I think it's the fact mine's an older phone that means it sometimes freezes etc.

Now, just need to get off my bum and go into the o2 shop to sort it out :)

CumberdickBendybatch · 26/08/2012 22:58

Nah, save yourself the direct contact with mobile phone salesmen and just order online :)

(she says, typing on an incredibly speedy one x)

CumberdickBendybatch · 26/08/2012 22:59

The one x has the third button too for switching between apps. Works much better than the Samsung there

PedroPonyLikesCrisps · 26/08/2012 23:00

The sales guys are ok if you know what you want already (as long as you avoid Phones4U!). Just watch out for the one who loiters around trying to sell iPhones to anything with a pulse!

CumberdickBendybatch · 26/08/2012 23:15

Nah, they're all bastards. Fact.

LollipopViolet · 27/08/2012 21:25

Oh trust me, I know what I want.

£21.50/month tariff, One X, thank you very much, goodbye.

Going into town to sort it tomorrow, can't wait! Grin No more "Your memory is full, please delete some apps" from this stupid Wildfire!

But what about insurance? Wink

ApplesinmyPocket · 28/08/2012 08:20

I have a One S, daughter has a One V. My One S was an upgrade for my Desire, then a Desire S. Now, the Desire did use to do the Freeze-and-remove-battery thing but neither of the Ones have ever done it (had them 6 months now) and they are both brilliant phones so look forward to your One X with confidence, OP!

Re battery life: I got a Duracell portable charger/battery which has been invaluable to take on days out, it gives you an extra 5 hours of life. The unit is small and lightish to pop in a handbag, you need to take a usb cable though.

LollipopViolet · 28/08/2012 12:24

To answer about insurance - I've got it covered on my hone insurance which offers the same as o2's own insurance but a bit cheaper :)

Picked it up just now - it's awesome :)
