I'm on Word 2007 and doing a lot of typing.

When I type, I just keep going further and further down the screen so that I always end up typing on the last line. It then moves down to the next line, which is again at the bottom of the screen, IYSWIM. I want the screen to scroll. I've tried putting in a lot of Enter marks and clicking back up to the top, but this isn't working.

I'm sure this doesn't happen at work, on 2010.

Is it just that there's a button I've clicked by mistake on my laptop?

Please help!

Do you mean that each time you type, the text only appears at the very bottom of the page? i.e Not in the usual top left hand corner

WMittens · 09/08/2012 17:48

How big is the top margin?

ImperialBlether · 09/08/2012 17:55

Thanks for replying.

No, I don't mean that.

I'm typing something that's several pages long. If I start at the top line (usual 1" margin) and type down, when I get to the bottom of the screen, I have to use the scrollbar so that that last line is at the top of the screen.

I like to have the line I'm typing on at the top of my screen, rather than at the bottom of my screen.

Have you changed the view you are using, i.e if you go into edit it should be in normal view rather than web page etc, just a thought.

Yani · 09/08/2012 18:02

Sorry, think I'm now out of my depth.
Whenever I use word I just type down the page, then use scroll bar or arrows.
I didn't even know there was a way of keeping the page moving upwards as I type.
Is that what you mean?

WMittens · 09/08/2012 21:19

I'm with Yani, I wasn't aware that was even an option. Just tested it and it always fills the page.

I can't imagine why you would want to keep the active line at the top of the screen; surely it's more useful to be able to see the body of text you've just written?

Just pondering: you do know that as you keep typing, the screen will keep the active line visible, albeit at the bottom of the screen?

If you want to manually move the active line to the top of the screen, just press the Page Down (or Pg Dn) key once.

ImperialBlether · 09/08/2012 23:56

Thanks, WMittens, yes I know the active line is always visible, but I'm sure at work I can have it so that my text always looks like it's at the top of the page. I know the Page Down button works but when I'm typing fast I want to keep my fingers on the keyboard.

It's just a visual thing (the reason why I want it) - I want to be looking at the top of the screen rather than the bottom.

Thanks anyway!

Yani, yes, that's what I mean! Not sure now whether it can be done or not.

Susie, I'm using Print Layout.

Page Down is on the keyboard Confused

Yani · 10/08/2012 13:07

Any luck resolving this one?

ImperialBlether · 10/08/2012 15:45

No, Yani, I haven't had any luck! I just don't like typing on the bottom line of the screen - my eyes naturally go to the top.

I'm writing a novel and don't really want to be reading what's gone before - I want to focus on the line I'm on and if there's clear white space underneath, that's easier.

The only thing I can think is that if I press Enter at the end of every line then it's not as bad, but I can't bear the thought of deleting all of those afterwards!

The only work-around I can think of is to click on "Restore Down" (just to the left of the "Close" button, top right of the screen). Then manipulate the resultant smaller screen by increasing the width and decreasing the height until you end up with only space enough for one or two typing lines.

If you're not sure how to do that - place your mouse pointer on the bottom right of the Word screen where the pointer changes to a diagonal double-headed cursor, hold down the left mouse button and drag the cursor around until you get the dimensions you'd like.

The only downside of all that is that whatever is behind the Word screen is visible, but you could open a blank page in your browser and toggle the Word screen over that.

What about pressing Ctrl+home together when you want the page to get to the top?
