Shine a light on my confusion: do I need an Kindle AND Ipod OR will an IPAD do the job?

We don't have any of these at home, Googled and now I'm confused by all the choices!

Wants: an Ereader of some kind so I can read in bed
: for the dcs to able to listen to downloaded music, through speakers more than headphones.

Am aware the Ipad is all singing all dancing but would I be better off with dedicated gadgets designed to do the one job? And any suggestions as to which version/s?

Ipad and download kindle app.

ChopstheDuck · 05/08/2012 16:29

The speake isn't that great on an iPad for listening to music. I just connect mine to speakers for music. It's great for reading though. If you have the cash I'd go for iPad over ereader. I had both, but kindle stopped getting used once I got the iPad

Olympicnmix · 05/08/2012 16:33

So Ipad and a pair of speakers? I spoke to someone at the AppleStore and got so much conflicting advice I was none the wiser!

The Ipad, I think I read, has a backlight so ok for reading in bed, if I download the Kindle app.

IPad weighs a ton when lying in bed reading. I've just bought a kindle with a light and it's much better

HermioneE · 05/08/2012 16:40

You need an e-reader rather than an ipad alone. E-readers aren't backlit so don't strain your eyes like normal screens do, much more like a "normal" book. Kindle with light would be better for relaxation and sleep.

Olympicnmix · 05/08/2012 16:42

I did wonder if it would be redlac. I've also pondered holding out for the Kindle Fire but read mixed reviews.

Kindle over iPad especially for reading in bed. Kindle is so much easier to use.
The iPad is fab for Internet and apps and games but I find rubbish for music and anything else really. Luckily I didn't buy it xh did for ds1.

I've got the 3G kindle and it's fab I download books wherever I am. I'm not very good at getting the free ones as generally don't interest me or I've already read them but still about same price as I would have paid in the supermarket. (trashy women's novels but mist definatley not 50 shades rubbish)

Olympicnmix · 05/08/2012 16:46

Thanks HermioneE, that's an important consideration which I've not given enough weight to.

So back to a back-lit Kindle and an Ipod of some description and speakers...I think!

Do Kindles come back lit or do you have to buy something extra?

OP posts:
MotionOfTheOcean · 05/08/2012 16:56

Kindles are not back lit, therefore kinder on the eye,you would need a clip on light for reading in the dark.

iPad for ipad'ing, add speakers for listening to music, preferably bluetooth. Kindle for reading. However, if you don't read much then an iPad would be ok.

3G kindle is useful, especially if you have a long train commute or travel a lot. If you only read at home then you don't need 3G.

My son uses a kindle cover with a built in light, my DH also has the same type of cover but rarely uses the light.

Olympicnmix · 06/08/2012 10:38

Thank you LeandarBear, your post has reassured me. Am a voracious reader which goes with my job, so I've ordered a Kindle Touch without 3G (based upon what Which? said) and a cover which comes with a built in light. The dcs like audio books so can see they might enjoy it too.

Decision now about Ipod or Ipad. Can see me getting all 3 at this rate but that would be very expensive!

if you get an ipad you wont need the ipod, unless you need something very portable?

I use my ipod for running and music in my car, im pretty sire with the same adaptor i could use the ipad for music in my car too, but obviously no good for running.

If it wasnt for running i wouldnt bother with the ipod as my phone has email and internet etc, so just use that when out and about and the ipad for browsing the net and shopping, and quick emails.

OneOfMyTurnsComingOn · 06/08/2012 14:02

Have you tried downloading the Kindle app to your iPod (is it iPod touch)?

I use the app in my phone, and read in bed all the time. You can change brightness, font size, and even to sepia. I have not once suffered from eye strain.

Just a thought.

OneOfMyTurnsComingOn · 06/08/2012 14:03

Sorry, just re-read, and you don't mention having an iPod. I must have dreamed it!

Olympicnmix · 06/08/2012 15:57

Hi OneOfMyTurns, am podless & padless! Have heard you can do that though but thought it would be too small, but interesting idea. Am assuming you can sync the Kindle or your Kindle account to the Ipod/Ipad if you have the app?

OP posts:
OneOfMyTurnsComingOn · 06/08/2012 15:58

Yes, you can synch your account. Personally it works for me. It's personal preference though.

LeandarBear · 06/08/2012 17:03

If you can stretch to an iPad I would imagine you wouldn't be disappointed. I prefer to use my iPad over my pc and laptop. It's so portable, easy to use and instant. I think they are fab.
