On BT have business hub - quite a distance from exchange as semi rural. The light is flashing on internet & ethernet. But when uploading or finding pages I just keep getting 'Internet explorer canot display this page' My e-mail is painfully slow.

I have tried numerous things and clearing out computer checking setting running diagnosis but nothing.

I am in the middle of a tender and in future need something better than this. I need to overcome this problem what are my options? I am paying for Business service but its not up to standard.

Before I go back to them can I have your feelings/opinons please.

Just did a system check (FOC)

4 speed issues
30 system tweaks
15 unused processes
235 invalid reg entries

I dont wnt to go spending money on one of these packages if I can do it myself.

Sounds to me like a connection problem, the lights should not be flashing on the hub but shoud be a solid colour.Have you tried ringing bt?Might be worth running a bt speed test,if you google it,its normally the first result.

We have this problem - BT have said it is probably to do with old phone lines just not being up to the job - they say they need to come to house to check but Im not sure how they would be able to fix it if they did - like you say srmi rural/distance from exchange a factor and are they going to replace phone lines? Unlikely Sad

In the mean time (not convenient for them to visit as DD not well) we use this trick passed to me by someone else with same trouble.

Phone your home line using mobile. Let it ring three or four times then hang up. Repeat. The connection should then repair itself.Shock

I know, i know, there is no reason why this should work but it does. You may have to try variations on theme - we used to answer call but this stopped working Hmm

I know BT should fix it and I hope they will soon - mean time give the above a try - hope it works for you.

We pay a business service and downloading is a nuisence, whatever pay we are viewing it goes off after a while.

Will call them but unsure what I can do - are there options bar getting a sat dish.

Satellite dish really is for those with no hope by other methods...

Lights should be solid but if not, problems can be caused by many things...

NetworkGuy · 19/07/2012 03:55

Have you been affected by flooding?
Are there very long lengths of overhead wiring from you to majority of dwellings (eg farm outside a village) with electric fences on that route?

NetworkGuy · 19/07/2012 04:29

MoreCatsThanKids - that sounds like problem I had in 2010...

Living in N Wales at time (few minutes away from it by car right now, but this time been in Hospital a week!), and if there was rain, broadband (and often voice calls) would fail for up to 5 days at a time.

I have Three mobile USB modem dongle so could run BT Openreach line test without anything plugged into BT Master Socket.

Every time, it said the fault was house end. Knew Openreach could charge up to 125 quid for visit (ISPs warn customers of this).

After reporting fault 5 / 6 times in 6 month period, I finally confirmed that I wanted an engineer visit on a Saturday. Young engineer turned up and knocked but before I got to front door he had ladders off van and was removing the old drop cable from near gutter level.

He said it looked to be 20 / 30 years old and the insulation had perished. Fitted brand new cable into my computer room (small front bedroom) and the newer design Master Socket (front has removable lower half, behind which is located the test socket).

Broadband went from 160 kbps up to about 2500 kbps (ie 2.5 Mbps). All down to very old (external, BT responsibility) wiring (which is part of what the monthly "line rental" charge is for). Their wiring, therefore no call-out charges, and free 'move socket' to boot!

NetworkGuy · 19/07/2012 04:36

PS reason ringing line a few times can 'cure' problem is that the current sent to cause "ring" may make water evaporate, instead of being a short-circuit between wires...

Cause a few rings and once water gone, no short circuit, so line back to carrying voice and data for you!

NetworkGuy · 19/07/2012 06:16

bacon - any idea how much you download each month ? Three and other mobile networks offer internet 'on the move' but even the most generous monthly deal of 15 GB for about 16 quid is not going to cope if you download many TV plays (am guessing because of typo in 18 July post).

If you like, send me your postcode and/or phone number in a private message and I will explore your options a little, while I am stuck here in hospital... will give me something useful to do, apart from stop a rambling patient from walking off the ward.

Snorbs · 19/07/2012 06:45

As it's a business service BY will put a lot more effort in than they would a residential one. I really would give them a call ASAP.

Whether the lights on the router should orshould not flashing is difficult too say because it does depend on the model of router.

I wouldn't bother with any of those online "PC tune up" services though. They're rubbish.

oshuk · 19/07/2012 21:16

Anyone elses bt playing up tonight. Appalling speed and keeps dropping out (wireless). Driving me mad..itv player is shite too.

CruelAndUnusualParenting · 20/07/2012 22:07

Flashing light on ethernet just means it's being used, at least on my router. Power and DSL lights are constantly on, when its working. I don't have an "internet" light.

You can log into the router and get some useful information out of it, but I don't know the details off the top of my head and it probably varies a bit with the router. Google for hte router type and diagnostics, e.g. "BT Voyager 200 diagnostics" and see if that comes up with anything.

It might be worth trying a spare microfilter if you have one. Also a BT iPlate may, or may not, help particularly if you have a lot of extensions.
