Argh!

So annoying.

Noticed that certain websites were hanging which was unusual as have BT infinity so used to very quick speeds.

DH stated that his iPhone wasn't connecting to google or bbc website. Discovers my iPhone is the same as is the laptop.

McAfee scan came back clear.

Now have manged to search via bing that we may have a spyware or malware virus. But its preventing me from connecting to any website and downloading malware removal tools.

Have found a list of instructions on antihacksecurity.com which I am currently doing including running a full scan via the mrt tool.

Is this the right thing to do? What if this doesn't work?

Am slightly concerned its been there a while and we've been Internet banking etc

Thanks for reading this far!

We have mcAfee subscription and use Firefox as a browser

can you visit www.hidemyass.com and then visit any preferred anti-malware sites (they have a web link showing Google.com - just replace it with sites you want to visit) ? If that works then the blocking is either on your laptop or router or a problem with your ISP

I've only seen one PC (where a son was sent a link and it installed malware and changed DNS settings) affected, and it should not affect other devices.

Are you using Windows on your laptop? Only ask because if both laptop and iPhone are affected (and both are using your home broadband via Wi-Fi) then there can sometimes be other problems, depending on ISP and router.

For example, the other day I was setting up some PCs for a client, and could not get the web browser to show any pages. However it was possible to "ping" them (a quick test like submarine sonar "ping"... gets a quick "yes I'm here" answer and time delay can help determine problems). Turned out that web access didn't work until you had installed the BT Broadband CD to set things on the router. Good job we had a PC with a CD/DVD drive (none of the 4 machines I took with me has a CD drive!), but the example goes to show how all devices were affected because of the router/ISP settings not individual machines.

Wow! Hidemyass has made the Web run as we know and love!

Before this I managed to download spy bot through file hippo but that didn't seem to do much.

Am now downloading malware bytes which I hope will fix it.

Last night we couldn't get on anything.

We have a windows pc and iPhones so would that mean we have a problem with the router too?

It sounds like an issue with your router/internet connection.

If you had a virus, it would normally effect just whatever is infected (e.g. just the laptop, or just the pc)...not everything.

Maybe try contacting your ISP?

Have you tried restarting your router, sometimes this will cure connection problems.

Its back and working!

Thanks for all tips and advice.

It seemed resetting the router has fixed it.

I'm annoyed that I didn't do that first and panicked into thinking we had a virus but at least now we have everytype of malware anti virus available!

Hidemyass.com was the great find as I was then able to get malwarebytes which really put my mind at ease.
