I love it, it's so sweet, and DS2 has got it working. Anyone else? What have you done with yours?

I was wondering the same thing! Have been thinking of getting one but didn't know if it came with a manual on how to program etc?

MrAnchovy · 09/06/2012 18:48

Where is mine - I ordered it on 28 May!

grumpyoldbookworm · 10/06/2012 16:20

Have just found YouTube stuff about how to use Scratch which comes with the linux stuff to put on the SD card and I can now make my dragon change colour and move! DS is not impressed... Managed to set the date though which is more grown up but less fun.

I am going to get one.....but so far, I don't get it. Why does DS need one, what will it do? Confused

HMQueenElizabeth · 10/06/2012 16:24

We ordered ours last week... Apparently it'll arrive in 7 weeks!

DH is thinking of turning ours into a media centre type thing. He's got 7 weeks. He's really looking forward to it.

@Lynette. The idea of the Pi is to encourage youngster's to program and generally get into computers. Just like the ZX Spectrum encouraged millions of youngsters like me to go into IT as a career, it is hoped that the Pi will do the same at a very low cost.

Personally I think it's a great idea and I also think the low price will encourage many people to do things with it which previously were not worth it. I've a couple of ideas myself but need to get my hands on one first!

robotCS · 10/06/2012 17:56

when did it come? We have one on order

LynetteScavo · 10/06/2012 18:12

As I said, I will buy one. I will give it to DS. I'm not sure I will ever understand what you do with it though. And I'm into computers; I MN a lot. And shop on-line. Wink

BlaiddDrwg · 11/06/2012 17:08

My DH has had his for about two weeks now and he is constantly tweaking it. He decided it would be best used as a media player for our bedroom. I don't understand the fuss myself but he has been like a kid at christmas since he got it.

I will probably sell a laptop or two and buy several in due course, mostly to do things like check different e-mail accounts and check different servers are up and running.

Obviously there will be a lot of "off the shelf" open source software to do things in due course, as my programming skills (learned some 30+ years ago) are somewhat rusty and I don't think I could do work for my clients and create a browser from scratch !

When the orders queue has gone down I won't feel guilty if I order 10 or 20, and hopefully there'll be fibre in my area so I can be sure there'll be plenty of speed for everything to be running at the same time.

Will have to check if EDF is still doing their 20:20 Eco account (cheaper electric for 9 or 10 hours overnight) :)

Well done those who have already got their own units. Will be interesting to exchange notes on what things are being developed in due course.

You need to build a case for it out of Lego now Smile

GetOrfMoiiLand · 15/06/2012 09:53

Oh you lot are so clever - I spoke to my colleague about this and he told me all the things you could do with it. I am very tempted to get one but fear I would just look at it blankly.

saw the other day that a version of Chromium might be workable and XBMC (think that's right) may also be made to work (its home video/music centre s/w originally for XBox). Browser too.

Just for comparison US Magazine *> PC World PC Retail NewsNow.co.uk

Finally got mine: sweet.

Wasted a bit of time with the currently recommended software (Debian Squeeze) until I noticed the beta of Wheezy which is a big improvement. 8YO DS is having some fun doing interactive stuff and loops with Scratch now (in full 1080p HD) while I SSH in setting up nginx and php.

Is that geeky enough?

NetworkGuy · 01/07/2012 22:29

yes, extremely geeky :)
