I have a document & I keep adding pages; each time I have to go & re-number my index as the pages stuff it up

Is there a way of labelling where a page is on the contents page? (so it might not be indexing)

Yes, use contents. You need to change the descriptor for your titles though I.e. header 1 and then as you go along your contents page will update (right click update) and should only pick up the titles. Have a play, it's complicated but doable.

KatyMac, what version of word are you using? In 2007, you can set up an automatic Table of Contents with Word. The Help function should help you with it in more detail but basically, you highlight the heading of each section / page and amend the format to Heading 1, or 2 etc and then go to Review, Table of Contents and insert Table of Contents to insert a Table of contents at the start of your document. The table will be incorrect whilst you're adding in extra pages but at the end, you just need to right click on the ToC and update the table. Does this help?

Possibly except I think I need the "Heading 1, or 2 etc" I think

Are you still stuck on this, Katy?

KatyMac · 07/06/2012 16:21

No I think I sorted it by accident but thanks for asking Smile

Use the Styles buttons to give your text a Header description.

The TOC command will then pull out those headers.
