Should I get a kindle 4 or a kindle touch?

There is £20 difference. I've been using dh's old school kindle (with keyboard) and I do find I quite often accidentally press the buttons and end up flicking around the book. Does the touch avoid this problem?

Any opinions either way? Thanks Smile

Shameless morning bump (bet all the kindle users were tucked up in bed reading their kindles when I posted last night) Wink

I heard people say the same thing about Kindle Touch - that they accidentally touch the screen and unintended things happen.

I'm very happy with my Kindle 4 Smile

CoteDAzur · 10/05/2012 07:44

Kindle Touch is significantly larger, too.

SpiffingWeatherForDucks · 10/05/2012 07:48

Oh is it?! I thought it was the same size as the kindle 4. I want the smallest one really as I have midget hands so smaller the better.

I bought a Touch this weekend and I love it so far! I've had a touchscreen smartphone for several years though so well in the habit of only touching the screen of techy things I'm holding when I actually mean to. DP bought the non-touch version of the most recent Kindle (I think that's the 4 isn't it, the one without the keyboard) at the same time and it looks the same size to me, or close enough so as not to matter. We bought exactly the same case for it too and they both fit fine. Although I'm going to have to take my case back as whatever they used to dye the leather stinks and it makes me feel sick; doesn't seem to be bothering DP but I can't bear it.

SpiffingWeatherForDucks · 10/05/2012 20:44

Which case did you buy naoko? (so that I can avoid itSmile)

I got mine in Tesco and the case I bought with it was a Tesco Finest one that they were giving a discount on if you bought a Kindle. It's a nice enough case, but I can't go within three feet of it....

Get the e-ink one that has a long-lasting battery.

Naoko · 10/05/2012 21:31

The touch and the 4 are both E-ink with long lasting battery Trills! I think you're thinking of the Kindle Fire, which isn't available in Europe anyway.

SoupDragon · 10/05/2012 21:32

I don't think the Touch is significantly larger. The choice depends on how you feel about touch screens TBH. I love the fact that I kind of turn the page rather than press a button. Although it's nicer on the iPad where those page actually turns :)

SoupDragon · 10/05/2012 21:34

I don't think I accidentally turn a Page any more often than I used to lose my place in a real book.

Trills · 11/05/2012 08:55

If it's touch-sensitive then it must be running current through the screen though, or else how does it know you've touched it?

HeathRobinson · 11/05/2012 09:06

What's the kindle 4?
I've just looked at Amazon and can see:
kindle
kindle touch
kindle touch 3G and
kindle keyboard 3G.

DarrowbyEightFive · 11/05/2012 09:08

I'm debating exactly this matter right now and have come to the conclusion that the extra money isn't worth it. The touchscreen will mainly be useful for choosing and buying books, and I would rather do that from my laptop anyway (just like I don't want the 3G model for choosing books up a mountain or wherever). And I read a review on Amazon (the German Amazon unfortunately, so no point in linking here) that a relatively high proportion of the Touch versions were being sent back as defective in some way. I get the feeling the touchscreen technology is still quite new and will be better by the next release, but for the moment I'll stick to the basic model. Another point is that I have a free book app for my I-Pod Touch (which I love for other functions - as an e-reader it's just too small), but the app keeps on accidentally swiping the screen forwards or backwards if you touch the left or right sides - that would REALLY annoy me on a Kindle.

CoteDAzur · 11/05/2012 10:50

Naoko - Excuse me but Kindle Touch and Kindle 4 are different in size and do not fit into the same cover, assuming that we are talking about a "shell" style cover like Amazon's own.

I know this from bitter experience - I ordered the cover for Kindle Touch by mistake, only realised it when it was terribly large for my Kindle 4, and had to return it.

SoupDragon · 11/05/2012 11:04

"but the app keeps on accidentally swiping the screen forwards or backwards if you touch the left or right sides - that would REALLY annoy me on a Kindle."

The Kindle differs from an iPod Touch in that it has a raised frame round the edge of the screen which lessens accidental touches. It is completely down to personal preference though.

SoupDragon · 11/05/2012 11:09

Sizewise,

Touch 172mm x 120mm x 10.1mm and 213g
Kindle 166mm x 114mm x 8.7mm and 170g

The differences are not significant from a practical point of view, unless you are buying a closely fitting case. The sort with the elastic straps will most likely fit both though.

Naoko · 11/05/2012 17:10

Cote - the covers DP and I bought weren't shell covers, but the ones with elastic on the corners, and those fit fine. As the difference is a few mm as pointed out by Soupdragon I hope I can be forgiven for saying 'it looks the same size to me, or close enough so as not to matter.' - clearly it does matter for the Shell cases, and that's good to know because that's probably what I'll be replacing my weird smelly case with. Probably doesn't matter for the OP though who was worried about it being too big for her hands, can't see 6mm making much difference there...

CoteDAzur · 11/05/2012 19:44

I forgive you, just as Amazon forgave me Wink

It felt like a pretty substantial difference to me, when I saw my Kindle swim in the Kindle Touch cover. I agree that it wouldn't matter re OP's finger size, though.

If you are looking to buy a new (shell) cover, I heartily recommend Amazon's own, with the cute little integrated lamp.

Naoko · 11/05/2012 23:50

Yeah, I probably will end up caving and getting one of those, I just had a 'they want how much for the case?!' moment when I was buying it. :o Still feels like an unreasonable amount of money for two bits of leather and a light to me, but I'm sure I'll get over it....

CoteDAzur · 12/05/2012 08:43

I know, it's daylight robbery. It is interesting that amazon.fr sells it for EUR 55 (GBP 44) and amazon.co.uk sells the same thing for GBP 50.
