Do web pages stay forever? How do you organise them?

I've got so many links and references that I want to keep

I've started using pintetest for things like links to recipies or places to go or things I'd like to buy when I'm rich. But will those pages be there forever?

Do I need to copy and paste things into word documents?

How do you keep track of the billion things you want to be able to refer to in the future?

archive.org/web/web.php

This is a link for the internet archive, if any web pages disappear this is the first place to look! You need the URL (web address) to work it though!

Web pages come and go. Some may survive on the Internet archive, others are lost for ever.
Firefox has a "save page as" function in the file menu and "save page, complete" should save enough to redisplay the page accurately for a lot of pages. I haven't used it enough to say what the limitations are, but I would not expect it to work well with AJAX (i.e. dynamically updating pages like Facebook.)

I use a social bookmarking service like Diigo or Delicious to save all of my favourites. Then you can access them from any computer, tablet or phone with an Internet connection. These services also enable you to tag your links and save them in groups.

It's what all my librarian colleagues do and if we don't know about organising information, as it is our job, I don't know who does!

Also, if you want to save clipped information from a page, you can use something like Evernote, which is fantastic! This allows you to make notes, lists, to do lists and copy stuff from any site. Then you organise it how you want. You can then synch it across laptops, PCs, iPads, phones so you have everything you need on the go! You can even take a photo with your phone then upload it to Evernote.

Oh excellent

Thanks for those ideas, I need to figure out what works best
Is evernote a website or something you have to buy?

Something else you might consider... doPDF is a free utility that creates a PDF file (for viewing with Adobe Acrobat or similar PDF viewer) from anything you "print" on your computer.

I have not had a printer connected for years (now and again some client gives me an old printer, but I have a lot of machines and tend to make copies of web pages etc as PDF files and then archive those.

Most of the time it is fine, but I have seen one or two pages where some text gets mixed up - think it is when web site developers try "clever" techniques as it had worked flawlessly for years until recently.

All of the things I mentioned are free. Evernote has a premium version, but I haven't paid anything so far.
