i have an iPhone 3 gs coming to end of contract. I'm not bothered about upgrading and it does everything I want it to..... Any recommendations on what I should do as I'm desperately trying to save money. Thanks........

giffgaff?

Giffgaff is where I get a sim card for it on payg or monthly contract? What happens to my number? Can I keep it? Sorry to be so uninformed... Usually upgrade but on strict budget cutting exercise ......

Another thing you can do is "upgrade" anyway, and then sell the new phone on eBay. I've done this a few times and been amazed at how much money I've got for the new phone. Whether it's worth doing depends on the contract you end up on, but in my case it means I effectively get paid about £100 to stay as I am. You're probably on a pretty expensive contract with an iPhone but you can move to a cheaper one, be given a less exciting new phone, flog it, then carry on with the iPhone you already have.

giffgaff

I pay £10 per month for enough call time/texts and unlimited data. It's great.

Prism, how do I sell on a contract...? Sorry if I'm being dim here...

If your priority is saving money then I'd get a Giffgaff SIM as already recommended. You can easily transfer your number across from your old provider by calling them up and asking for a PAC code.

The 3GS is still a very good phone.

I'd advise against getting a phone on contract then flogging the new phone. You'd be stuck on a 2 year contract with a phone you've sold. Not only is that a royal pain in the arse, the provider will block the phone if you for whatever reason stop paying. A lot of people now insist on checkmend reports for this very reason. Esp. for more expensive phones.

Interesting point, niceguy- I hadn't thought of that, but then again I never thought of not paying my contract :-).

Giffgaff does sound like a good idea, but the selling the upgrade thing seemed good to me as I applied for a PAC code and was then offered a really good deal including a new phone that I didn't need, as they wanted to keep me. The phone and the contract are completely separate- you don't actually need to use it, just because they gave it to you. So I sold mine as a new unopened phone, and carried on with the old one. It was locked to the network, but that doesn't really matter, as it just means there are millions of people who could use it, instead of millions and millions. You will see unwanted upgrades for sale on eBay quite regularly- that's what I did.

Thanks so much for all your advice... Really much appreciated. Will prob go down Giffgaff route as trying to simplify my life and save money too.....
