Which smartphone has a really good camera?

I am about to give in and get a smartphone. I shudder at the cost though so I have been thinking about what I really want it for( other than 'Oh look, its so shiny!!!).
I am not actually that bothered about the internet I spend too much time on it already , but I do want a really nice camera so I can leave my other camera at home.
We have an imac which I love, DH has just got a Galaxy S2 and the camera on that looks very impressive. How does the iphone 4s camera compare to that? And are there any other phones with good cameras worth looking at?

camera on the iphone 4 isn't that good - particularly in lower light. Some photos have come out really well - when they are good they are good - but more often than not they are just snaps. Quality if you even think about zooming goes rapidly downhill and not good in lower light.

Worst thing about it though is the shutter lag time - seems to take forever, especially when you want to catch a cute quick moment.

It's handy though if you are somewhere and want to take a quick pic for reference. And I do tend to now take pix of all things like hospital appointment letters, pick up codes for online purchases, insurance documents, school timetable and events lists, - basically anything that I might want to refer to but not have with me - quality is fine to zoom in and read without any problems, you just need to take a moment to make sure you have got good light and hold the camera nice and still. But - whilst that is fine if you are taking a pic of a document as it is unlikely to run away, it's not quite so good when you have a couple of speedy little ones zooming around and you want to catch their antics!

If you want to see some pix taken inside without zooming, some with flash, some without, on an iphone4 camera all the photos on my profile have been taken with it.

I still keep a small camera in my handbag to take decent pictures when we're out though, and if we are going somewhere 'proper' where I know I want decent pix (wedding, zoo, holidays etc) then I'll take my proper dslr with me as the shutter time is so much faster and the pix are so much better!

Oh I am really hungry now after looking at your pictures! Might have to steal some of those ideas for dinner this week. Smile
Thank you for the info on the Iphone. I'm beginning to think I should just stick to my cheapy phone and camera in bag combo and spend the money saved on a DSLR instead.

The iphone 4 camera is actually very respectable for a phone camera. The 4S is even better. The galaxy S2 actually is criticised for the camera being the let down of what otherwise is an amazing phone. The HTC Sensation camera is also very good.

BUT

None are anywhere close to even a point & shoot camera. Certainly don't even try to compare it against even a basic DSLR, let alone a modern one.

As a camera enthusiast, get a DSLR! lol

Oh I think the camera on my Samsung Galaxy S2 is really good. My sister has an iPhone and I'm Designated Event Photographer with my phone.

aliportico · 03/04/2012 00:43

Yeah, as a non-photographer I am extremely happy with my G2 and have taken loads of pictures in the last 4 months :-) Far more than I ever have before.

My dh is rather into his photography, and went for the G2 over the iphone a few weeks ago, partly because of the camera.

aliportico · 03/04/2012 01:04

Duh, just realised I put g2 instead of S2!

Iphone 4s camera is considerably better than other iphone. I have a galaxy ace and t
he camera is ok but v slow. Id imagine more advanced galaxies would be considerably better

MNHubbie · 07/04/2012 17:25

I've always found the iPhone4 camera to be very respectable. The zoom isn't that hot but the picture quality is amazing at least as good as our excellent digital camera (but without the powerful zoom. You can buy an optical zoom case for the phone though).

usingapseudonym · 07/04/2012 17:25

The new Sony Ericsson phones get excellent reviews for cameras.

NagooBunnytail · 07/04/2012 17:31

Not an iphone. There is a reason why there are a million apps to tart up your photos. I think my iphone 4 is shite compared to my old sony eriscson.

Hulababy · 07/04/2012 17:31

iPhone 4S has an 8meg camera now and the pics I have taken outside have come out really well. Not used it much indoors yet. TBH I don't use my phone camera much at all, so not something I know much about. I always carry a normal compact camera and often have a big slr with me anyway.

DH has a Samsung Galaxy S2 and it seems reasonable too.

thenightsky · 07/04/2012 17:35

HTC desire HD has excellent camera. I've done loads of video with it too.

Bunbaker · 07/04/2012 17:39

The Galaxy S2 has one of the best cameras for a Smartphone - 8MP. I didn't want to pay the £££ required and settles for the Galaxy Ace which has a 5MP camera.

sinisterduck · 07/04/2012 17:41

nokia n8 has 12 megapixels- great pictures.

fatcaaah · 07/04/2012 17:47

I love my HTC desire hd. As thenightsky said the camera is excellent.

it's 8mp and when all my photos are printed I can't tell which are from my camera and which from my phone.

It's a big phone though which I don't mind, lovely big screen for mn! But some people don't like the size.

SadGeek · 20/04/2012 14:53

Another vote for the Nokia N8. Nearly 2 years old and it's still the best smartphone camera out there. Here's a stupidly geeky comparison.

And it will probably remain the best ... until the Nokia 808 Pureview appears.

befuzzled · 21/04/2012 14:52

I have just upgraded to an iPhone 4s and am findi g the camera very good, but only comparing tO 3GS and a canon point and click. Zoom let's it down compared to a DSLR of course but that's to be expected.

Interesting thing I came across when looking at the iPhone 4s (or any smartphone camera) that I had never heard of was the choice of colour of the phone - don't know of this is really true but some photo geeks were dating always get the black phone not the white ( I was going to have white for a change) as they take slightly better photos apparently due to letting in less light or something? Could this be true?
