should I update my ipad 1 to ios5??

I think my ipad needs to be updated, a few of my apps don't work (Livingetc, and the FT) and it keeps randomly asking for my password, regardless of what I'm doing...

But I've read online that the ipad becomes shit once you update it. Keeps crashing and very slow. WE already have a slow internet connection, it will be really annoying if it becomes difficult to use.

Should I just try to persuade DH that I should get an Ipad 2? Mine has dd's movies and apps on it so i'd quite like one with only my stuff on it.... DH is a big spender on wine, so I don't see how he can deny me spending a bit on a toy...

My ipad 1 has had IOS5 on since the day it came out.

I've not noticed it slow down or crash. Some apps are buggy such as Facebook and crash anyway but thats more down to Facebook's dodgy coding than Apple.

So I wouldn't worry about updating it. But if you want to get a new one, go for the new ipad rather than the ipad2. No point in getting an older one

mine hasn't ever crashed since updating

Oh good. Still nervous but I guess I should just update and then see what happens, and decide to whether to get a new one after that.

Can you explain to me if you lose all yr apps when you update, if you reinstall do you get charged again? I have quite a few for DD. Mine are mostly free.

You don't lose them. Also new iOS has back up facility which is really handy

Nope, you don't get charged again. Even assuming disaster struck, your ipad had to be replaced AND you didn't have a backup. When you go to download the apps again it will tell you that you've already paid and let you install it for free.

As long as you make sure you've updated to the latest iTunes before you kick off the update, you will be fine. Oh also make sure your ipad settings are set to back up everything you need, contacts, photos etc. A lot of people miss the tabs along the top of iTunes.

The update will make a backup anyway and it's fairly painfree. It is a slow process though so allow a few hours for it to download the IOS files it needs, do the backup, upgrade the ipad then restore all your apps back.

I updated my ipad1 without a problem- though there is a point where it looks as if it's all finished but it's really not - I think it was people who unplugged at that point who lost their apps, but a resync got them back. Just make sure you do a backup and leave it until it's completely finished.

I did actually notice increased crashing of Safari after I upgraded, but it wasn't often enough to be a real pain, and it always came straight back - I found that it helped to turn it off occasionally, which I usually didn't do.
