Why not load up DVDs that you have or can rent from Blockbuster or LoveFilm? Saves on roaming fees.

If you are interested then let me know and I'll let you know what software you need.

MedusaIsHavingABadHairDay · 22/03/2012 07:36

PushedtotheEdge.. would you mind sharing please? I have just bought an ipad and would like to put some of the (many cough downloaded) films I have on my macbook on there but have no idea what software I need. My films aren't in itunes and I have no idea how to get them onto the ipad! Thanks!!!!

TheCunningStunt · 22/03/2012 07:42

I'd like to know this too!

silver28 · 22/03/2012 07:46

We've tried putting our DVDs onto iTunes so that we could put them onto the iPad but failed, so I'd be grateful for some advice on this. I understand that most DVDs are encoded and we tried using handbrake software that was recommended to us but it didn't work.

PushedToTheEdge · 22/03/2012 10:44

Please take your seats class :)

If you have downloaded movies then you need to convert the files (usually .avi) into the Apple format i.e. .mp4.

If you have dvds then some distributers will encoded the dvd to stop you 'ripping' them. For these dvds there is an extra step.

Google 'AnyDVD'. This software will strip out most encoding protections and copy the DVD contents onto a folder on your PC.

Google 'DVD Catalyst 3'. This softeware will take your downloaded movie/DVD/DVD folder and convert it to the Apple format plus others.

You just tell the software what gadget you have eg iPad, Ipod, Blackberry, Nokia etc and it will sort out file type and resolution.

After the convertion is finished you will have a .mp4 file which is ready to be loaded into iTunes.

Please note - Not all DVDs are encoded. I suggest you try to convert the DVD first and if DVD Catalyst complains THEN you put the DVD thru AnyDVD.

Open up iTunes. Click Edit > Preferences > Advanced. Tick box that starts 'Copy files to iTunes Media Folder. Then OK.

Click File and then either Add file to library or Add folder to libary. I suggest that you set up a folder called iPad Videos for example. Convert all your movies into this folder and then do the Add folder. Saves you adding a file at a time.

And that is it.

Just a couple of things. AiPad movie is typically about 1.2GB. Depending on your iPad model and your movie collection, you may want to tick only the movies you want to sync with your iPad now and just swap the movies in and out of your iPad

For those with iPhones or Touch the iPad file will play on those gadgets. But if you only have an iPhone then telling DVD Catalyst this will get you a file that is about a quarter the size of an iPad file.

Also, your video has now been copied into the iTunes folder so the original file that you ripped the DVD into can be deleted.

PushedToTheEdge · 22/03/2012 10:49

CORRECTION

AnyDVD will strip out the encoding but it will not create a folder on your PC. All it does is to tell your PC/DVD Catalyst to ignore the stuff that the distributer has put on the DVD to stop the PC reading and copying it.

If you want to back up your DVD onto your PC for later burning then you will need something like DVD Strink.

silver28 · 22/03/2012 11:08

Thank you very much! Will be trying that out this weekend and may be back with further questions (technical thicko)....

TheCunningStunt · 22/03/2012 13:38

Thankyou!

tostaky · 22/03/2012 14:19

pushed - will that work if i buy a dvd from amazon or lovefilm??
itunes doesnt have a great selection at all...

PushedToTheEdge · 22/03/2012 15:12

I'm assuming that you meant 'rent' as opposed to 'buy'.

Yes that will work. 'My way' is much more flexible. You have a copy of the DVD for the price of a rental and you can put the movie onto your phone, iPod, Ipad or whatever.

silver28 · 22/03/2012 15:40

Pushed, can I just check something? We have an apple computer rather than a pc, will this all work on it? Not sure what OS is, but it's four years old if that makes a difference? Might be leopard?

silver28 · 22/03/2012 15:43

I don't think we're able to save DVDs onto the computer, can only view them.

SoupDragon · 22/03/2012 16:01

I've done this using Videora and whichever DVD ripper then recommended. Just rip the DVD and then use Videora to convert it to iPad format.

I have, however only done this with DVDs I own.

Some work, some don't - Disney are particularly tricky IME.

PushedToTheEdge · 22/03/2012 16:06

Which Apple OS you have doesn't usially matter unless it is a seriously old version.

The software that I mentioned are available for Windows only. You mentioned Handbrake earlier and how it didn't work. Is it possible that it does work generally but you loaded a DVD that has some encoding protection put on? Do you have some home movies DVD that you can try since that definitely won't have protection on it?

I don't work with Apple OS but if you were to post the Handbrake error info then I may be able to make an educated guess

With regards to saving DVDs, you can't manually drag and drop the contents of a DVD onto your PC or use some general disk back up utility. This is because the DVD producers put information on the DVD that will confuse a PC if you try to copy the DVD using Windows or Apple OS. The software that I have mentioned gets the PC to ignore this confusing info.

PushedToTheEdge · 22/03/2012 16:09

Soup Dragon - If you are on Windows then try AnyDVD. You get it running in the background. You then pop in the DVD and AnyDVD will scan it and override the protection. You then use your current software to rip the DVDs.

SoupDragon · 22/03/2012 16:44

I will do - it's on my list of things to do now I have two iPads [smug]. My old one has been designated Family iPad which means I have more space for films on it and don't have to have them cluttering up my own shiny ipad3

PushedToTheEdge · 22/03/2012 21:04

As Homer Simpson would say - IPAD THREEEEEE [wipes envious drool off side of the mouth]

silver28 · 22/03/2012 21:23

Thanks again pushed. I'll have a go at this at the weekend.

Well, I've offended at least two MNetters today so I'm just trying to stay out of trouble by hiding here :)

SoupDragon · 22/03/2012 22:13

Stay out of trouble? By drooling on my new ipad ?

PushedToTheEdge · 22/03/2012 22:18

Ah yes but did you notice that I was drooling in a respectful manner?

SoupDragon · 23/03/2012 07:05

It still made a shocking mess.

coansha · 24/03/2012 12:14

Yes I've been lynched before for joking, but will give your advices try later.

Disney films have a whole lot more encryption that Videora can't crack. I tried!! You will need to download dvd43 to your computer and software called Handbrake. Be aware that handbrake is only compatible with 32 bit Windows7 ( we have 64 grr)
Leave said dvd in drive and open up handbrake. Put the setting on the right to universal, name the file you want it to create as then leave it cooking.
I've now got several films, that we own the disk of, on the iPad for back up and hols.
