I bought a memory stick today as I need to transfer documents from my laptop to someone else's computer.

I put it in my laptop, and I suppose I expected a little icon to appear saying something like 'memory stick device', so that I could then click and drag documents from my laptop on to the memory stick. You know, like used to happen in the days of using floppy disks?

Instead, I'm getting a box saying:

[laptop icon] USB2 (F:)
General options

[folder icon] Open folder to view files
using Windows Explorer

[clock and memory stick icons] Speed up my system
using Windows ReadyBoost

Set AutoPlay defaults in Control Panels

I have tried clicking various parts on this box, but I don't understand any of the messages that follow.

Please can anyone help?

Well if you click on Open folder to view files nothing will happen since there aren't any files on the memory stick

The USB2 thingy is just the name of your memory stick which you can change to PrincessFlorimonde's stuff or something like that!

The Speed up my system is....I dont know...a load of tosh..ignore it Grin

The set AutoPlay controls is to set what you want to happen automatically when you insert a Memory Stick, or plug something else in your PC

drag something onto the USB2 bit. See what happens

The F bit is just what the laptop calls the drives. I think C: is the main hard drive and D: is your DVD drive usually (sorry I'm on a Mac)

Thanks, FruitShoots, but my problem is that there doesn't seem to be anything opening on my screen as an obvious USB2 thingy icon that I can drag a document to.

Sorry, I was a bit hysterical earlier, but have now decided that as I can't understand the bloody thing, I'll have to give up on the document and then just get my young cousin to talk me through the process sometime. With diagrams. Preferably a foot high.

Thanks anyway.

I used to have a Mac.

I'm a hopeless techy but do put my (travel) photos on memory discs.

Insert memory stick, then go to start and then click on "computer". There you will see the memory stick (indeed "F" I think).

Then you can drag the files you want to in there. I then check the memory stick to see if it worked! Grin

Hope it helps.

Thanks, suburbo.
