I am thinking of getting a kindle for my DD for her birthday.

I don't know much about them, do you think it would be appropriate for her age and are there many books to choose from?

There are loads of free books available and ones you pay for. As someone who read a lot i say go for it! I teach and several of my students have them, as do lots of the teachers.

We also got my gran one and she loves it

There are websites which will tell you about books becoming free for a limited period and also enable price tracking. www.ereaderiq.co.uk
Prices of books vary, lots of choice especially if willing to read things written by new/unknown authors.
Only potential issue is that it's very easy to buy books, so your DD must be trusted to not just buy books without asking you first. No parental lock to my knowledge.

we got dd (9) one for christmas - she is an extremely fast reader and every time we went on holiday we'd have to pack a suitcase of books just for her and even then she'd run out after a few days.

She knows not to buy anything without checking with us and we've had no problems

the only thing I'd like is the option to borrow books rather than buy

my 10 yo DD has one and loves it, until she has read the whole content

there are not that many free age appropriate books and you do have to be careful -on amazon if you search free children's books there are an awful lot that are definitely adult and x rated adult at that

my DD can be trusted not to buy books, new releases (David Walliams, Jaqueline Wilson etc) can be as much as the paperback version but there are quite a few around for 99p if she is not fussy about the author

Children classics like Tom Sawyer can be downloaded for free elsewhere on the Internet. They do need to go through a piece of software that will convert the file into the Kindle format.

If you aren't technical then you may want to keep to the Kindle store. :)

Thanks everyone, I went and bought one for DD today.

I noticed there was a protective leather cover you could also buy and one had a lighted cover, worth getting too?
