Is PC Tuneup Masetro a scam?

I appear to have downloaded it to my laptop and its found over 1000 things it wants to fix to help the laptop run faster. I've tried googling to see if its a scam and I've found reviews that say it isn't a scam, but then when I try and leave the review page I get locked in so now I'm worried even the review sites are scams. I've had a dig around and while the "reviews" don't seem to be terribly trustworthy, there was nothing to indicate that it does anything other than claimed.

I don't think it's dangerous, but I suspect that the performance improvements will disappoint.

Have you tried scanning it with SuperAntiSpyware and MalwareBytes? They should warn you off, if it's nasty.

When you say you 'appear' to have downloaded it, did it just appear, or prompt you out of nowhere to install it? Or did you go looking for it? If the former, that's a huge red flag. If the latter....I had a bit of a google and I'm slightly dubious. I'd scan with malwarebytes and a good free antivirus, then download Ccleaner, which is known to be legit, to clean up your registry, temp files, cache, etc. If your laptop is still slow, come back and we'll see what else we can do that doesn't involve dubious-looking software no one is willing to vouch for :o

I haven't scanned it, I don't think I have a scanning programme that you mentioned so will see if I can download one. I've got avg and that hasn't screamed at me.

I did click to download it. I was trying to download some macro programme thingy and it said it couldn't download and needed a programme to help it download and that this Tuneup thing would help the download.

I'm not sure what you mean by a macro programme thingy, but that sounds hugely suspicious to me. The fact that it prompted you to install this is a massive red flag I'm afraid, especially as I can't find anything in any of the reviews of 'PC Tuneup Maestro' to suggest that it actually has any download improving/helping functions (whatever they might be). I am now suspicious that although PC Tuneup Maestro might be a legitimate piece of software (still on the fence about that one) what you have there is a similarly named piece of malware masquerading as something legitimate - very common malware trick, that.

Scan your PC with AVG, first making sure AVG is fully up to date. Then install Malwarebytes and run that too. I would also remove this Tuneup thing, if it'll let you, as the whole thing sounds deeply dodgy, and find another way to get the macro programme (?) you need.

CCleaner, which I mentioned earlier, is a good and legitimate way to clean your PC up, so that might be worth a go later on as well.

Lovely, will do all that, thanks.
