Ipad2 and apple tv - does anyone have apple tv?

If so, why?!

I love the look of it. What I would want to do is be able to play stuff from skygo/itv player etc on my tv screen. Does it effectively mirror what is on your iPad so for example I could see what I am typing here on my tv screen?

It has great and awful reviews on amazon Xmas Confused

We have it but only really use it to play music stored on the pc through our surround sound speakers. It can do loads more though - films, tv etc. We don't have an iPad yet.
My dh who is into all these gadgetty things thinks it is good.

Gigondas · 30/12/2011 16:48

Not sure about ITV and sky but you can play movies or bbc iplayer stuff on it ( plus music and photos). You can beam some
Live website that shows tv on it. So yes but if you want more details will have to hand over to dh ( he is quite into his apple tech and did take some fiddling about to get ours working - that said we use it loads ).

Oh and he is now checking on sky, ITV player compatibility

Rudawakening · 30/12/2011 17:11

Yes we have it, not sure about sky but you can play Iplayer and YouTube plus rent or buy the latest releases on film and tv, display photos, play music. It is pretty good. Your iPhone or iPad can be the remote as well.

GiganticusBottomus · 30/12/2011 19:01

Oh thanks Gigondas! Sky Go is brilliant and downton abbey is on ITV so it is essential Xmas Grin

Can you mirror the ipad on it- so you can see on the screen what you are seeing on the ipad?

sorry, thanks Rupert and rudawakening too - wasn't ignoring you Xmas Wink

I think you can set it up to
Mirror (maybe only on ipad2) but tbh it doesn't really matter as can see it all on screen. We use it lots for playing music/ looking at photos and also for playing kids tv stuff (being lazy it's quicker for me to beam rapunzel for the 10860867 time to tv then get a DVD).

You can copy DVDs (not all as disney for example are protected so need to buy them on iTunes) and play them via apple tv which again is useful for kids (not that you can tell that I am in the tv dependent late stage of pregnancy).

bluebump · 30/12/2011 19:09

We have one but not an Ipad.

We use ours loads when we are away from home as we put loads of DVDs on it so our DS has stuff to watch that he's familiar with and we have films to watch etc. Using the iPhone as the remote is rather clever too!

GiganticusBottomus · 30/12/2011 19:11

so how do you load films on bluebump? Are they ones that you buy from itunes and then you store on there Xmas Confused

OP posts:
Gigondas · 30/12/2011 19:12

Bluebump we do that too- but was worried that would look too geek like (makes an evening when cant go out due to little kids on holiday bearable tho-)

GiganticusBottomus · 30/12/2011 19:12

Gigondas - yes I have ipad2, only have the smallest memory though, so not a lot of room for storing films on it.

Gigondas · 30/12/2011 19:13

You can buy or rent from iTunes. The iplayer also works but not outside uk (unless you mess about with it). Am not sure if sites like love film are iPad compatible

GiganticusBottomus · 30/12/2011 19:13

Not geeky - sensible! Holidays in UK aren't known for their dependable weather. So how do you get the films on there?

OP posts:
Gigondas · 30/12/2011 19:13

You can use apple tv from apple computers which gets round some of memory issues (not sure If works with windows)

Gigondas · 30/12/2011 19:15

Download via iTunes giganticus- there is a section for films and also for tv shows (that's how we watched the killing- lots of quite current series on there)

VivaLeBeaver · 30/12/2011 19:15

I think you can get a connector lead that links your ipad to your tv and plays whats on the ipad on the tv. Might be cheaper than an apple tv?

MmeLindor. · 01/01/2012 11:28

Joining this thread cause we have Apple TV and I think we are not getting the full benefit.

Must investigate iPlayer. If you are not in UK (like we are) you can connect to a vpn network and get iPlayer, not sure if it will connect to AppleTV though. Hmm.

One thing that I don't understand though, is that I thought I could watch films that I had downloaded on iTunes (ie. bought, not rented) but I have to switch laptop on and turn on iTunes to watch.

Is there a way of avoiding this? Using iPad?

Pantofino · 01/01/2012 11:34

Mme - have you seen FilmOn.com? You can download the App and watch the main UK channels for free!

I am going to investigate Apple TV now.....is it an App?

Pantofino · 01/01/2012 11:35

Also the BBC Global iPlayer has loads of good stuff - 5.99 euros per month.

MmeLindor. · 01/01/2012 11:38

oh, going to look at that. Yes, have the global iPlayer, is v good.

Apple TV is a magic box, a sleek black magic box.

It is very pretty.

redlac · 01/01/2012 11:50

Mmelindor. If its appletv 2 you have then it doesn't have a hard drive you can save stuff too so that's why you have to stream stuff from your mac to the atv2.

I'm considering jail breaking my Atv so I don't have to convert downloads and allow me to add apps to the Atv

MmeLindor. · 01/01/2012 11:58

ah, it is I think. What a pain. So the original one had a hard drive? Wasn't that much better?

redlac · 01/01/2012 12:13

Yes it did have. Don't know why they didn't do it for the newer model :(

savoycabbage · 01/01/2012 12:45

You can connect your ipad 2 to the tv without an apple tv and then watch iplayer through the iPad.

Pantofino · 01/01/2012 13:32

how - savoycabbage? With a cable?

redlac · 01/01/2012 14:32

Your iPad should have AirPlay on it - it's a wee icon when you watch YouTube etc it's like a square with a triangle at the bottom of it
