Netbook keeps losing wireless connection

I got DD a netbook for Christmas and its fine most of the time. But for some reason, it loses the internet connection.
When I click to find a solution, it tells me the defualt gateway is offline (I think thats what it says anyway)
DD has resorted to sitting by the router with the netbook plugged in which isn't ideal but does the job.

Any solutions on how to fix it?

Have you tried restarting the router?

southeastastra · 29/12/2011 20:11

did you remember to put in the password etc? am thinking you might be connected to another router, not an expert btw!

kid · 29/12/2011 21:33

I did restart the router but it made no difference. Sometimes it stays connected for just 5 minutes, other times 2 hours (or possibly longer if I let her stay on it!)
Its connected to the right router as our one is named and I entered the WEP code or whatever it is I am using. I have so many wireless things linked up to it, I am wondering if thats the problem? (ipods, ipad, mobiles, xbox, laptop)
She seems happy enough to sit close to the router, it just bugs me!

When you restart the router, you need to restart the laptop as well. What security are you running and have you installed all the updates through Windows update?

kid · 30/12/2011 11:13

I have run some of the updates, not all.
I have restarted both the router and the netbook but not at exactly the same time.

I have 30 day free trial of the antivirus that came with it (Kapersky) but I also have a McAfee antivirus disc to install. I just need to find it.

Just installing the updates now, there are 3 but I didn't look what they were.

How many other wireless devices do you have and how reliable are the connections on other connected wireless devices?

In my experience, 90% of intermittent wireless problems like this can be corrected by changing the channel used by the router. Recently my wife was having real problems with her wireless connection. I used Inssider to see which channels were busy and changed from channel 9, which was busy, to channel 3, which was quiet and the connection problems disappeared.

kid · 31/12/2011 16:56

We have loads of wireless things running off the router. 3 mobile phones, 2 ipods, ipad, xbox, laptop and netbook.

we sometimes lose connection on the xbox, ipods and netbooks. Everything else works well. I don't know how to change the channels tbh.
My router is a belkin n+ and my internet provider is Virgin.

Changing the channel cured this problem for me go here

kid · 01/01/2012 17:48

That link makes it sound simple enough. I hope nothing else will need resetting or reprogramming though. It took me forever to get the xbox live connected when we got the router. I don't think.dS could cope without it!

When I changed the channel on the router nothing broke. As long as you don't change the SSID (network name) or the security settings, anything that connects to it should have no problems with the channel changing.

kid · 01/01/2012 22:55

Thats brilliant. I changed the channel (it was on 2, changed it to 1) and the netbook is fine. I'm sure DS will let me know at approx 7am if the xbox live isn't work!

i tried this as have been having same problem.it just says this page cannot be displayed when i type in the adress bar to change it.grrrrr.

cheesesarnie · 02/01/2012 12:16

maybe i should try it on the laptop?

shakeitright · 02/01/2012 12:37

What router are you using?

cheesesarnie · 02/01/2012 14:30

bt home hub i think?is that the router?
it seems ok at the moment.i tried it on laptop but it said that that page was unsupported or something!

shakeitright · 02/01/2012 14:43

I have a home hub and to aceess the settings,I put bthomehub.home/ into the adress bar,you will probably have to go into advanced settings to change the wireless channel.

cheesesarnie · 02/01/2012 14:46

thankyou!should i do it on the home computer or laptop or doesnt it matter?its ok atm so i'll write down the adress for next time(usually half way through research for an essay!)

shakeitright · 02/01/2012 14:51

it doesnt matter which you do it on,I sometimes have to change channels two or three times a day,dh has a temperemental phoneGrin

cheesesarnie · 02/01/2012 15:19

thanks shake.im so rubbish at all things technical!
really!2-3 times a day!

CointreauHoHoHoVersial · 02/01/2012 15:23

Can I ask a dumb question? Is it more likely that you'll lose connection if you are supporting loads of wireless things (phones, laptops, iPod Touches etc) than if you just have one or two?

shakeitright · 02/01/2012 16:04

I dont know anout the amount of things connected but if you live in an area with a lot of people who have routers ,there is a chance that your router is using the same channel as somebody else, therefore prone to interference which in turn loss of wifi.BT recommend using channels 1,6 or 11.There is a programme calledinSSIDerwhich you can download, this will show what channel your neighbours are using, meaning you can choose a less congested one.
At any one time I have about 6 things connected wirelessly but has been as many as 10.
