I just want very basic cropping, red eye removal type stuff. Does anyone know anywhere I can download something which will do this?

TIA

Picnik is what you need (and nothing to download)

ElfOfThePerverse · 20/12/2011 22:40

That is absolutely perfect, thank you. Thanks

I've just discovered another slight cock up though, the pictures I want to edit have been sent as pdf files. I fear I may have to start another thread to get advice to turn them into a format I can upload to picnik. Rats.

I use Picasa which organises my photos for me and finds ones I thought I'd lost, and does all the cropping and colour adjusting I need for Ebay pics.

I don't think it does complex stuff like picking out background colours and changing them but was chuffed to find Snappy Snaps would do that for a complex pic for me for £10 and give me the resulting file as well as a print.

Why would someone send you a picture as a PDF? Have they done it on purpose? The whole point of a PDF file is that it's easy to read and hard to edit.

Easiest thing to do is to ask the sender to email you a JPG version.

What niceguy2 said! Why on earth would they do that? Do they realise that you want to edit the pics?

I like GIMP but I wouldn't say it's very basic - it's actually a pretty powerful program, for free, and I didn't realise because I've been using it for years, but some friends I've recommended it to recently have said that there's quite the learning curve or maybe they're just thick Grin .

You can just copy the image(s) out of the PDF and into an image processing package. Select the image, right click on it and there should be a copy option. If not update your Adobe reader. So on Windows open up Paint, or some other tool, and then just paste and there should be your image.

I'm presuming that you're not on a Mac but if you were iPhoto would do all that you required.

I use gimp too like lazydog. I've never found it particularly tricky Confused

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 21/12/2011 09:07

I like GIMP too. It will open a PDF and you can then edit it and save as a JPG.

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 21/12/2011 09:12

The trickiest thing I found to get my head round with GIMP is that it opens a new instance of the programme each time you open a file (whereas with Photoshop, you have all your files open inside one instance of Photoshop IYSWIM).

There is a long story regarding DP, a work scanner, 3 attempts and a pdf end result. I could ask him to go and do it again but I honestly think it's easier to download something so I can do it myself.

GIMP has done the job and now I can play to my heart's content - hurrah!
