That's it really, grrrr. Had a new router and its crap, only works if you're sitting next to it, defeats the object of wireless. My DS' netbook he's having for Xmas connected once, now won't connect so we're going to have a fun xmas day. Grrrr. There's nothing wrong with my laptop of netbook they both connect effortlessly to other routers and networks. I've phoned Talk Talk and requested a new router, do you think it will solve it,somehow I doubt it :( sorry, had to get it off my chest.

The problem is one of:

  1. The Router
  2. The wireless signal
  3. The computers

So nothing to actually do with Talk Talk's broadband service...

You've crossed 3 off the list by trying the computers elsewhere, which leaves 1 & 2.

1 is being sorted by having a new router being sent out.

However the problem could still be 2, that it works when you're next to it suggests that the signal might be very weak or being blocked by something (actively, other wireless networks, or passively, walls).

If you can get into your routers configuration settings try changing the channel that it operates on, if it's other wireless signals interfering with your own that might fix it.

Thanks Badgers. Daft question but is the signal different for a different router?I didn't have any problems with my old talk talk router. Sitting next to it helps with my laptop, however the netbook wouldn't connect wirelessly at all (however, it did eventually through an ethernet cable). Strange how it connected before though. Also, it seems to be better in the day than in the night.

How can I get in my routers configurations settings to change the channel?

The router could be broken, or your other router might have been set up on a different and "quieter" channel.

That you see different levels of success at different times of the day suggests quite strongly that the problem is that there are too many other routers near you using the same channel. So at night when people come home it gets noisy and your router and computer can't hear each other. So switching to another channel might be the trick.

How to do that will vary enormously on which router you have, so you need to dig up your manuals or phone for help. Generally you will want to go to a special web page on your router where you also will set up passwords. Somewhere on there will be an area for setting up the wireless network and within that an area to set the channel.
