Blu Ray/HDMI/Scart....

We have a TV which states on the back that it is HD ready (big official Sony Sticker). We do not use anything HD at present. (Non-HD) Sky and current DVD player connect via Scart leads.

Intending to buy a blu ray player as we are now being given Blu Ray discs which we cannot play. Blurb on Amazon says you need an HDMI cable so buy it with the player. I cannot see anywhere on my TV where an HDMI cable can be plugged in, only scarts.

How will I play my Blu Ray?! Do they also use scarts?

FYI, it's a Panasonic Player I am looking at if that makes a difference....

TIA

Just had alook on the back of my Sony tv. The HDMI cable looks a bit like a usb cable on the end and goes into a rectangular slot much the same shape. It's a bit bigger than a usb but not much. HTH. Also, cheapo HDMI cables are just as good as expensive ones, gadget show tested them recently and said so!

Thanks for looking, I have just rechecked mine and I have lots of round sockets, two scart sockets but absolutely no USB/square type shaped sockets at all.

Hmmm. Had been hoping to avoid the rummage in the study for the long lost instructions, but looks like I might need to give it a go, as it seriously well hidden if it is indeed there.

And thanks so much for the tip on HDMI cables. the one recommended on Amazon is £1.45 and the reviews are fantastic!!!!

Ok, my other TV (small one in the playroom) DOES have HDMI, clear as day, so it means I either need to swap the TV's over or watch my films in the play room!

At least we can watch them somewhere

Is there a HDMI port at the front? Perhaps under a flap?

If it's HD ready then it certainly should have a HDMI port somewhere.

Snorbs · 06/12/2011 14:45

Can you post the model number of the Sony TV?

madeupstuff · 06/12/2011 14:49

Or perhaps there's a DVI port (there are simple HDMI/DVI converters)

this is the HDMI port that you're looking for. right?

anonymousbird · 06/12/2011 17:10

Have looked under the flap at the front. No sign
Found instructions, no mention anywhere.

Yes, that is the HDMI port I am looking for. I found it on the other small TV, so came back and checked again. Nada!

Definitely says HD ready on the Sony sticker.....
It is a Sony Wega KLV-L23M1, Manufactured 05/2005....

Thanks for all this info, though, at least I am learning a thing or two as I endeavour to enter the digital age.....

Ah ok, i did a bit of googling and that TV indeed doesn't have a HDMI port.

In fact, I'd say it is bending the truth a little describing itself as HD ready but there you go. It is 6 years old which in TV terms means it's an OAP.

anonymousbird · 07/12/2011 10:30

!!!! OAP indeed, one foot in the grave, I know niceguy.

It is due to be replaced, sadly the budget for 2011 doesn't quite stretch to it, but agree HD ready is very misleading!

It's "HD Ready" inasmuch as it can display HD-quality pictures but it can only do that over a component video connection rather than HDMI or DVI.

There's no technical reason you couldn't manufacture a Blu-ray player that has component video out. But you can't get them because of copyright issues. A Blu-ray player with component video out could be plugged straight into a recorder and you could then copy the movie. HDMI encrypts the data and you can't (legally) buy anything that can record off of an HDMI connection.
