My email account was hacked into and loads of spam sent from my account. I got a message tonight saying that someone had been sending spam from my account and they had closed it down. It says that I can get a code from another email address similar to mine to get back into it. The reason I am not happy is because I can still access my email from the iPad. I am right to be suspicious or does Hotmail do that.

It has occurred to me that I don't have a password for the new email address. Anyone any ideas please.

This isn't some sort of phishing scam is it? Is the email telling you your account is closed definitely sent from your email provider?

It said it's from Windows live. When I tried to recover the password just now it's asking me to put in my password and any previous passwords and asking for details of my card numbers, last four digits, emails I sent recently, folder names, subjects of my emails. I'm scared to go any further as I suspect something is wrong. It asked me to give another email address to send the code to. Any suggestions as to what I do next?

Also I can't get in through the iPad either now.

stop stop stop!!!!!! you would never need your card details to get a hotmail account. have you got another computer? log in, and change your password. check the actual email address this message is from.

I think this is some hideous phishing thing. The whole alternative account thing stinks - don't give any details away and no one needs your bank account details.

Google some of the phrasing of the message you got - you won't be the first target, and it may help you find a solution.

Huge phishing red flag I'm afraid. I don't have a hotmail account but I would be very surprised if there was any circumstance in which they'd ask for details of your credit cards. Don't click any links, don't give them anything, and anything relevant you've already given (passwords, usernames of other email accounts, especially if you use the same username/password combo in more than one place, personal details) you will need to change where reasonably possible; if you've given them any card details I'd be tempted to cancel the card or at the very least make the bank flag the account in case of fraud.

Go to the hotmail login page by typing the address into a browser, don't click any links, and then try to log in. If you can't, use the password recovery facility there to get back in rather than anything from an email. Once you are back in, check your computer for any malware such as keyloggers (malwarebytes is good, just google and download) and run a virus scan too; once you're sure the pc is clean change your password.

Eeek! Yes, what boxoftricks said. Close down everything and contact hotmail direct, do not give other email addresses, do not enter passwords and definitely don't give card details!

This is why I have not gone any further but how can I change my email password if I can't get in. This info did not come in an email address I am getting this when I contact windows live. I gave them another email address to contact me but nothing has come into it.

If you hit the forgot password box do you have another email account linked that they'll send a new password to? Can you get in using secret question answers?

deste · 25/11/2011 22:28

I have run Malwarebytes just now and Mcafee

I contacted the bank and they said everything should be ok.
