What's the best FREE software that I can download to get rid of it. Windows privacy protection has detected I have 62 threats/viruses and now won't let me any programme on my computer until I buy their software to get rid of them.

Windows Privacy Protection is the virus....

If you can download and run this:
www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free

You might need to do that on an uninfected computer, copy the file onto a memory stick and then run it on the infected machine.

Thanks will try that later.

OK I have tried to run it but it only goes as far as choosing what language I want to run it in and then it says it can't be opened because a malicious program has been detected on my computer.

Reboot the computer in "safe mode with networking" and then try installing and running MalwareBytes again.

Instructions on how to do this are here:
www.computerhope.com/issues/chsafe.htm

When it says to hold a key down I get the best results by rapidly tapping it, holding it down often locks up my keyboard, or maybe I'm just rubbish at it :)

nappyaddict · 17/11/2011 22:16

I did that and left it running but when I came back to it later the laptop had switched off. When I switched it back on the virus was still there and now I can't get back into safe mode at all.

Just incase anyone else has this problem run http://tigzy.geekstogo.com/Tools/RogueKiller.exe. When it asks press number 1 and enter. That got rid of it for me.

I would still download and run MalwareBytes as a matter of urgency. I'm not terribly sure exactly what RogueKiller.exe is but very worryingly there are some reports that it too is a virus (Trojan). The downloading and running of an uncertain tool that claims to be doing something for your computer is a prime means of infecting a computer.

Running MalwareBytes should check that everything really is OK, and I'm, hoping that it is.

CruelAndUnusualParenting · 18/11/2011 16:12

I have heard that you can sometimes fool malware into letting you run malwarebytes by changing the file name, e.g. if it's called mbam.exe, rename to angrybirds.exe and run.

nappyaddict · 20/11/2011 15:51

Will Malwarebytes get rid of the Trojan if it is one?

Yes,it will but I am a little confused why you used that tool to remove the virus you said you had.Geeks to go recommend using Malwarebytes for Windows Privacy Protection.

nappyaddict · 25/11/2011 17:23

Because Malwarebytes won't run with that virus as the virus won't allow you to open any programmes.

"Because Malwarebytes won't run with that virus as the virus won't allow you to open any programmes."

So can you now run Malwarebytes and is it reporting that the machine is clean?

If you can't then the machine is still infected and you can't trust it to do anything on, it could be watching everything you do and sending your bank details half way around the world.

hollyonthesleigh · 25/11/2011 22:25

The thing that worries me is if I go to the geekstogo website and click on the tool to remove Rogue killer,it gives me a different link to the one you have linked to,where did you find this tool?

nappyaddict · 28/11/2011 16:41

On a geeks to go forum I think.

I have run a scan and removed all the stuff it put in quarantine. Shall I run another scan to double check?

"I have run a scan and removed all the stuff it put in quarantine. Shall I run another scan to double check?"

Do you mean that you've run scans with MalwareBytes (and that therefore it now installs without problem)?

nappyaddict · 28/11/2011 22:51

Yes once the link I put above removed the worm then I was able to run Malware Bytes. I have run a scan and deleted all the items it put into quarantine.

BadgersPaws · 29/11/2011 09:34

Phew... There are lots of genuine clean up tools out there, but there are also a lot of fakes that want you to run them on your machine so that they can do all sorts of bad things, it can be very hard to tell the difference.

nappyaddict · 03/12/2011 11:33

The location of the virus was:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\privacy.exe

I think if you type that in then you would be able to delete it straight away without having to use RogueKiller?
